Posted on June 22, 2009 at 7:38 pm

The big presser:

Mt. Juliet, TN – Senator Mae Beavers, whose political career began 19 years ago when she won election to the Wilson County Commission announced today that she will be running for the position of Wilson County Mayor in the election scheduled for August 5, 2010.

She served as a County Commissioner from 1990-1994 and represented West Wilson County in the Tennessee State House of Representatives from 1994-2002. She was elected to the Tennessee State Senate in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.

“As important and satisfying as my work in the Senate has been, I am looking forward to coming back to Wilson County with the opportunity to lead and make a difference in the county government that serves my friends and family.”

“While I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish in the State Legislature, I’m equally proud of the things we were able to do when I was on the Wilson County Commission. I introduced and the county commission passed the first financial management act in the history of the county. I served as the first chairman of the Finance Committee under that act and we bought the first computers for the finance department. We were able to go four years without raising county property taxes, and we built schools.”

“I’m looking forward to coming back to Wilson County and working with the County Commission to keep Wilson County strong, to keep property taxes low, to build the schools that are needed, and to continue to recruit industry and create good jobs.”

Senator Beavers has a Bachelor of Science degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. She worked as a court reporter and paralegal before being elected to the county commission, and more recently worked as a financial advisor. In the Tennessee Legislature she was a leader in the fight to stop the passage of a state income tax. Since being elected to the State Senate, she has taken a leadership role, serving in this past session as the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Jeff Woods reports that Bob Rochelle may be looking take yet another shot at reclaiming his old Senate seat now that Mae Beavers is out of picture:

That old warhorse Bob Rochelle is supposedly thinking about running again for Beavers’ Wilson County seat, but Democrats would do better to find someone else this time. Rochelle’s day has passed. That was clear from the ass-kicking he took from Beavers his last time out. The income tax did him in.

Beavers has been making noise to this effect recently. Beavers has been in the Senate since 2002. She succeeded Democrat Bob Rochelle. While the district has trended Republican in recent years. It is not a layup hold for the GOP.

Beavers is one of the most conservative members of the state Senate being the lone member of the body to vote against the budget passed last week.
