Why McCain Will Not Pick Lieberman

Posted on August 28, 2008 at 11:57 am

Because the rules forbid it:

The major thing standing in the way of a Lieberman Vice-Presidential pick for McCain is a seemingly small thing - an RNC rule that states that a Vice Presidential nominee must have been a Republican for at least 60 days prior to nomination.

There are only two ways around that rule as far as I know - the first being that Lieberman has already switched his party affiliation a couple months ago secretly without letting anybody know (highly, highly, highly unlikely). The other option would be for the delegates to vote to waive that rule at the RNC — and it’s not hard to imagine how that would go.

The Guy Who’s Not The Guy Is The Guy: Obama Picks Biden

Posted on August 23, 2008 at 12:21 am

It’s looking like the first African-American nominee has picked a man who once bragged on being from a slave state:

The United States Secret Service has dispatched a protective detail to assume the immediate protection of Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., a source tells ABC News, indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate.

Eric Cantor Getting Veep Vetted For McCain

Posted on August 2, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Media Lizzy reports that the campaign of John McCain has requested records from Rep. Eric Cantor likely for the purpose of vetting him as a potential Veep candidate:

He has been a forceful critic of Democrat Barack Obama’s resistance to lifting the federal ban on oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Cantor has strong support among the party’s conservatives, perhaps comforting a segment of the base of the GOP that has been reluctant to embrace McCain, who has promoted himself as a maverick.

Cantor is also Jewish and would could bring an important segment of the electorate behind the Republican ticket. If McCain wins with Cantor as his running mate, Cantor would be the nation’s first Jewish vice president.

His drawback is his obscurity. Cantor was elected in 2000 from one of Virginia’s most conservative House districts. No Democratic challenger has come close to defeating him since, including actor Ben Jones, who played the Cooter character on the “Dukes of Hazzard” television comedy series.

Al Giordano reports that John Edwards has requested the use of his former North Carolina campaign space back from the small business he donated to and discusses whether that could mean that Edwards is Barack Obama’s choice for Vice President.

Lamar Openly Leaks McCain Veep Search Team Leader

Warning: If you don’t want the name of the guy running your Veep search team leaked, you might not want to embarrass a guy behind the scene by making calls to scuttle the man’s run for Minority Whip:

Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) told The Hill that Arthur Culvahouse, who was Reagan’s White House counsel from March 1987 to January 1989, will be helping McCain vet candidates and develop a list.

Alexander and Culvahouse have known each other for decades and both have connections to former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-Tenn.).

“It’s Arthur B. Culvahouse, that’s who’s heading the search,”
Alexander said.

Culvahouse refused to comment to The Hill, as did the McCain campaign.

“John McCain is heading his search committee, and other than that we don’t talk about it,” said Charlie Black, a top McCain adviser.

Phil’s Veep Angle

Jeff Woods thinks there is no doubt that our Governor is angling for a spot on the Democratic ticket:

Bredesen seems pretty serious about landing the veep spot. He’s remained uncommitted even after Clinton swept Tennessee’s primary. And unsolicited, he’s offered himself as a party leader to settle the nomination fight, making the rounds of TV talk shows to propose a superdelegate convention in June. He holds obvious advantages for the Democrats as a Southern governor.

If Bredesen does want the job why not step out and endorse Obama? Wouldn’t that help his cause more than sitting on the sidelines?

Now would be the perfect time. It would have the effect of muting the John Tanner endorsement of Hillary yesterday and it would allow Obama and Gore operatives play up speculation about an Al Gore endorsement of Obama to reporters writing the story. A good little bump for Obama and chit that Bredesen can cash out in his Veep interview.
