Roe Removal

Posted on August 29, 2008 at 7:17 am

Sharon Cobb thinks she has a pretty good idea who will be announced as John McCain’s running mate today — Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison:

I read her official bio from her Senate page before writing my post, and in it, she said that Roe vs Wade was the right decision.

I decided I better copy and paste her bio in case she removed her pro choice activities in case she’s McCain’s choice, and guess what? Her pro choice activities have been removed since midnight!!!!

That doesn’t prove she’s McCain’s VEEP choice, but it sure points in that direction!

Why McCain Will Not Pick Lieberman

Posted on August 28, 2008 at 11:57 am

Because the rules forbid it:

The major thing standing in the way of a Lieberman Vice-Presidential pick for McCain is a seemingly small thing - an RNC rule that states that a Vice Presidential nominee must have been a Republican for at least 60 days prior to nomination.

There are only two ways around that rule as far as I know - the first being that Lieberman has already switched his party affiliation a couple months ago secretly without letting anybody know (highly, highly, highly unlikely). The other option would be for the delegates to vote to waive that rule at the RNC — and it’s not hard to imagine how that would go.

The Guy Who’s Not The Guy Is The Guy: Obama Picks Biden

Posted on August 23, 2008 at 12:21 am

It’s looking like the first African-American nominee has picked a man who once bragged on being from a slave state:

The United States Secret Service has dispatched a protective detail to assume the immediate protection of Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., a source tells ABC News, indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate.

You Gotta Be Chettin’ Me

Posted on August 22, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Race42008.com is flummoxed by the AP’s revelation that Rep. Chet Edwards was a finalist for Veep:

Chet Edwards? You have got to be kidding me. I know Nancy Pelosi has touted him in the past few months, but I figured she was just trying to flatter him. I didn’t think it was possible but if this is true, it could end up being a significantly worse pick for Obama than Tim Kaine or Kathleen Sebelius. Chet Edwards has a national name recognition around 1%. Indeed, I live and breathe politics and I had never heard of him until Pelosi brought him up in June. He’s a very conservative Democrat and is completely unproven on the national, let alone state, level. He doesn’t bring much to the ticket at all. He’s not going to help turn Texas blue (he is definitely not LBJ), he doesn’t have any military experience. He’s not going to help woo the disaffected Hillary supporters. This has to be some kind of last minute disinformation, right? I just don’t understand.

Obama Campaign Moves Seem More Than Bayh-Curious

Posted on August 20, 2008 at 11:31 am

Ken Whitehouse reports that Barack Obama’s camapaign activities indicate that Senator Evan Bayh may very well be the Veep Obama’s been looking for:

NashvillePost.com has learned that senior campaign officials from the Barack Obama Presidential campaign are being dispatched from various locations around the country and are converging in Indianapolis, Indiana for a “major event” to take place on Saturday.

Bredesen Not On Obama’s Radar

Posted on August 6, 2008 at 11:53 pm

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that Jeff Woods article of yesterday was simply a fun little exercise:

Though Bredesen is sometimes mentioned as a possible candidate for vice president, he said neither Obama nor anyone else from the campaign has talked to him about a spot on the ticket.

In another sign that he isn’t on Obama’s list, Bredesen said he hasn’t been asked to provide any documents to the vice presidential committee that is interviewing and vetting possible contenders.

Eric Cantor, Club For Growth’s Preferred Veep

Posted on at 11:25 pm

From Kavon Nikrad:

Recent reports that GOP presidential nominee John McCain is vetting Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-07) for the vice-presidential slot has prompted inquiries from the Club for Growth PAC about Rep. Cantor’s record on economic issues.

In short, Rep. Cantor’s record in the House, beginning in 2001, has been consistently strong in several economic policy areas, including free trade, school choice, tort reform, drilling in ANWR, and tax cuts. In the key area of government spending, Cantor’s record started out less strong, but has shown marked improvement in recent years, to the point where Cantor now ranks among the most pro-growth members in the House.

Eric Cantor Getting Veep Vetted For McCain

Posted on August 2, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Media Lizzy reports that the campaign of John McCain has requested records from Rep. Eric Cantor likely for the purpose of vetting him as a potential Veep candidate:

He has been a forceful critic of Democrat Barack Obama’s resistance to lifting the federal ban on oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Cantor has strong support among the party’s conservatives, perhaps comforting a segment of the base of the GOP that has been reluctant to embrace McCain, who has promoted himself as a maverick.

Cantor is also Jewish and would could bring an important segment of the electorate behind the Republican ticket. If McCain wins with Cantor as his running mate, Cantor would be the nation’s first Jewish vice president.

His drawback is his obscurity. Cantor was elected in 2000 from one of Virginia’s most conservative House districts. No Democratic challenger has come close to defeating him since, including actor Ben Jones, who played the Cooter character on the “Dukes of Hazzard” television comedy series.

A New Entry In The Veepstakes

Posted on July 31, 2008 at 12:48 pm

The Moderate Voice floats the name of former Senator Bob Kerrey:

In short, he’s the kind of Democrat John McCain could work with — and the kind GOP voters could support. But it’s not just many Republicans who could support Bob Kerrey for Vice President. Choosing Kerrey as his running mate would also serve to cement John McCain’s credibility with political centrists and independents, two voting blocs who put a premium on bipartisanship and who will be critical in the election.

At a time when Barack Obama is on the verge of making history by becoming the first African American to head up a major party’s ticket, choosing Bob Kerrey as his running mate would give John McCain the opportunity to make history as well.

It would be the first time a Republican and Democrat have run together on the same ticket. It would truly be historic. More critically for McCain, it would also be a bold stroke and something that, given his strengths, could help propel him to victory in November.

Overnighting A Veep Rumor

Posted on July 28, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Marc Ambinder bandies about a Tennessee name in the national chatter:

A dark horse, to be sure, but some McCain advisers are asking others what they’d think about Frederick Smith, the chief executive officer of Federal Express. Mr. Smith is 64, an articulate spokesperson for Republican economic principles, knowledgable about globalization and economic flattening, and a long-time friend of McCain’s, to boot. He was also a Marine and served in Vietnam, earning a chest full of medals. And while he’s a reliable support of GOP causes, he has many Democratic friends….

Is Romney The Pick?

Posted on July 22, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Jason Bonham says yes. Lindsay Graham refuses to discount the possibility and the National Review runs down the financial benefits to McCain if Romney is on the ticket.

Furthermore, a Boston Globe analysis asserts that Romney’s decision to absorb $45 million with of campaign debt means the man is readying himself for the job.

Is this all circumstantial or does the preponderance of evidence lead you to conviction?

More Carly Fiorina

Posted on at 1:24 pm

If you didn’t get your fill of former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina yesterday, the TNGOP has more from the potential Veep’s visit to Middle Tennessee from Marsha Blackburn’s Women of Distinction Luncheon:

Poster Girl

Posted on at 10:28 am

Business School Professor Bruce Barry lends some insight as to why the press may not have so eager to attend a TNGOP-hyped press conference featuring Carly Fiorina:

Fiorina, a poster child for the fundamental corruption of executive pay, walked away from this sparkling performance with a $21 million severance package after the HP board summarily fired her. One can only hope that McCain taps her for VP and has to spend the next three months defending her tarnished leadership brand.

I Don’t Appreciate Your Ruse, Sir

Posted on at 6:50 am

Sharon Cobb is not buying that John McCain will be choosing his runningmate this week. Her reasoning is simple:

To wit, yesterday afternoon, someone high up in the McCain campaign leaked to Robert Novak that McCain would make his choice for VEEP known this week.

Will that happen? No.

The ONLY reason to do it this week is to take the focus off of Obama’s foreign affairs victories, because McCain thought that was Obama’s weakest issue.

That said, there is no advantage other than the above, and that’s not enough.

McCain has the advantage going into the Veepstakes, because his convention is a week after Obama’s, and McCain will have the advantage of knowing who the Democratic VEEP is, therefore knowing whether to put a woman on the ticket instead of Romney.

Veep Not Worth The Vet

Posted on July 7, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Why Jim Webb took himself out of the Veepstakes:

A Democrat close to Webb confirms that a request for documents preceded his declaration to the Obama campaign. The Democrat said that Webb did not want to relive the vigors of a campaign so soon after his election to the Senate.

Webb’s statement suggests that Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, the two leaders of the team, had received instructions from Sen. Obama to vet a number of finalists, including Webb.

Joe Lance thinks it is plausible that Colin Powell would actually hook up with the gang that made him sellout his intregity while selling the Iraq War:

I’ve talked with a friend at work about a McCain-Powell ticket since 2000. Could it actually happen? How attractive would it really be?

Office Space

Posted on May 26, 2008 at 10:29 am

Al Giordano reports that John Edwards has requested the use of his former North Carolina campaign space back from the small business he donated to and discusses whether that could mean that Edwards is Barack Obama’s choice for Vice President.

Corker For Veep?

Posted on May 16, 2008 at 8:04 am

Tommy Oliver, a conservative critic of the Senator during the 2006 Republican primary, says why not:

I doubt that McCain will be calling Senator Corker to be his running mate anytime soon, since Corker has been extremely critical of the Senator from AZ from time to time, but if things don’t work out in 2008 for Republicans, Corker is a man that they should give a long look towards in 2012 as a possible candidate. He has business credentials that are almost as strong as Mitt Romney’s, as he was a self made multi million dollar CEO of the largest construction company in Tennessee, which he expanded into a successful real estate business. He has executive experience in running a government, and was successful. While mayor of Chattanooga from 2001 to 2005, he cleaned up the city. He also served as the Commissioner of Finance and Administration for Tennessee from 1995-2001. By 2012, He will have spent six years as a Senator, and is establishing the conservative voting record to brag about. He will have had experience in both the legislative and executive branch to match, and since he was elected, he’s been talking so much sense conservatively that Fred Thompson would be proud. Lastly, he’s still only fifty-three, and could be around for a while.
