Remember, Remember The Eleventh Of September

Posted on September 5, 2008 at 10:50 am

Wes Comer doesn’t think Republicans should be chastised for showing the footage from the Trade Center and Pentagon attacks during their Convention:

This isn’t a Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, or Constitution Party issue. It’s not a black thing, a white thing, a man thing, or a woman thing. This is an American thing. We should watch it every year just like we watch the footage of the Pearl Harbor attack. Every American should count on having a lump in their throat each September, and should give pause to remember that we face a very real, no matter how faceless, enemy.

If every time there’s a gray cloud in the sky we’re forced to watch footage of the Katrina disaster, complete with bodies floating in the water, should we be satisfied when we’re told that “out of respect for the dead we’re not going to air the 9/11 footage?”

Remember. Remember. Remember.

Joe Says It’s So

John McCain’s Democratic consiglierie says America needs a wartime president:

“Especially at a time of war, we need a president we can count on to fight for what’s right for our country — not only when it is easy, but when it is hard,” Lieberman said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Republican National Convention.

Red Said Fred: Thompson Brings The Beef

Posted on at 5:52 am

Ken Whitehouse has the report from the hall on Fred Thompson’s address to Republican National Convention:

Thompson took several shots at the Democrats’ criticism of Palin, Alaska’s governor, as inexperienced.

“She is from a small town, with small-town values, but that’s not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family,” he said. “Let’s be clear… she is a courageous, successful reformer who is not afraid to take on the establishment.”

He also drew laughs in lampooning Palin the huntress.

“I can say without fear of contradiction that she is the only nominee in the history of the either party who knows how to properly field dress a moose… with the possible exception of Teddy Roosevelt.”

On the GOP litmus issue of abortion, the roof nearly came off the room when Thompson said, “We need a President that doesn’t think protecting the unborn is above his pay grade.”

Thompson, who was briefly in the GOP race for the presidency before withdrawing, touched on some other hot topics that he said illustrated big differences between McCain and Obama.

“We need a president that doesn’t think protecting the unborn is above his pay grade,” said Thompson, a comment on the GOP litmus issue of abortion that drew loud cheers.

“People love to see Fred,” said Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander. “He did a great job today in showing the party and the country why John McCain is the best person to be president.”

Bill Phillips, former Deputy Mayor of Nashville, also in St. Paul for the convention, was equally has impressed as Alexander.

“[He was] fantastic, he hit every major point that needed to be hit. And because of his other career, he was the most recognizable person in the room,” Phillips said.

As Whitehouse notes, at 19, the Soddy Daisy native may be the youngest delegate at the convention. The TNGOP’s Randy Stamps joins Fairbanks in the photo above.

Three Times More Fred: Thompson To Pinch-Hit For Arnold At Convention

Posted on August 31, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Via the Weekly Standard:

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is skipping the Republican National Convention this week in Minnesota to manage an ongoing budget dispute in Sacramento. Republican officials say Fred Thompson will take his place in the prime-time lineup Monday night and onetime presidential candidate will have nearly three times longer to speak than he was originally given for his speech on Tuesday.

Run Away: Bob Corker To Be MIA From Minneapolis [CORRECTED]

Posted on August 30, 2008 at 11:13 pm

CORRECTION: National Journal appears to be misinformed. Post Politics is told Senator Corker will be returning from his trip to Georgia September 2 and will attend the Republican National Convention.

Tennessee’s junior senator will be among the GOP members of Congress conveniently finding somewhere else to be during the Republican National Convention:

The office of Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee announced that he won’t be in Minneapolis-St. Paul because he will be inspecting damage this week in the country of Georgia after the recent Russian attacks.

Ron Paul’s Trojan Horses

Posted on April 22, 2008 at 8:07 am

Patrick Ruffini discusses the affect that Ron Paul supporters efforts to elect delegates at various GOP state conventions could have:

Short term, county convention delegates elect state convention delegates. In many cases, the state conventions elect delegates to the national convention. The end result could be a lot of Ron Paul people sitting on the floor in St. Paul, pledged to vote for John McCain but free agents otherwise.

Little will be decided by the delegates. Outwardly, their goal is to get Paul a speaking slot, which I imagine he’ll get, at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday night.

But by far the biggest impact delegates can have is through floor demonstrations. In some ways, their reactions to the speeches set the tone for the convention, amplifying messages from the stage. Remember how Pat Buchanan enraptured the floor at the 1992 convention but lost the country? Or how the Texas delegates turned their backs on gay Republican Congressman Jim Kolbe in 2000? Now, imagine, Paul loyalists get 20-30% of the seats on the floor in St. Paul, controlling delegations like Missouri, with a significant presence in Minnesota, with closest promixity to the stage. Can the speakers safely voice a pro-victory message in Iraq without a significant amount of boos and catcalls? How will this look on television? And don’t forget, national conventions are also heaven for reporters trolling for off-message quotes from delegates.
