The Audacity Of The Racist Graffiti
Posted on September 8, 2008 at 11:04 amSean Braisted reports that an Obama supporter has been the victim of an apparent hate crime:
Unfortunately hate and racism still exist in cities throughout the US as evidenced by a hate crime committed today September 6, 2008 in Franklin, TN just outside of Nashville. A family member’s vehicle was parked outside of my house in an upper middle class neighborhood yesterday evening. We received an afternoon phone call from a neighbor informing us that the vehicle parked in front of our home had been painted with obscenities such as: the N word, “F#$% Obama”, “McCain Rules”, “White Power”, and others that will go unmentioned. We proceeded to go outside and witness the monstrosity for ourselves. It was heartbreaking. I imagine that there have been other occurrences of this sort as our nation works through this extremely significant and emotion-charged time. I think it’s important that we continue to spread the message of unity and respect for each other regardless of whether or not we agree with each other. We need to continue to convince people that these acts don’t accomplish anything. For those who are incapable of listening to reason, we need the support of the media and of law enforcement officials in Franklin, TN and throughout the nation to show, with a big voice, that this will not be tolerated. We also need law enforcement to take the investigation of these matters seriously.

Bredesen To Walk Point On “McMansions” Talking Point In Ohio
Posted on August 21, 2008 at 1:21 pmNot really the guy I’d pick. From Barack Obama’s latest itinerary:
OH: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns at events throughout southeast Ohio
Now, I can’t remember what Phil Bredesen’s net worth is off the top of my head but, suffice it to say, it’s substantial.
Why would Obama want Bredesen on this particular talking point?
That’s what he gets for bragging about being all populist and stuff, I suppose.

Folks Just Being Polite
Posted on August 18, 2008 at 3:47 pmThe Coyote Chronicle blogger sees opportunity for Barack Obama in the ignored rural areas of Tennessee:
While canvassing last weekend, me and The Missus were blown away by the response to Obama: Disproportionately positive. We have a HUGE opportunity to register voters, and solidify our base in areas OUTSIDE of Nashville. Please notify the County Chairs to get off their collective asses, and get us some tools.
For The Love Of Buck
Posted on August 17, 2008 at 2:05 pmSome folks do not think Jennifer Buck Wallace, the (for the most part) volunteer Obama for President coordinator here in Tennessee, is getting sufficient props for her efforts on behalf of the cause:
Jennifer Buck Wallace has been working voluntarily with zero financial compensation since May, 2007 (except for a couple of months during the Primary season) to harness the enthusiasm of TN Obama volunteers and channel them to the appropriate areas according to their skills, experience, time allowances etc. She has also overseen countless events, conducted key meetings and compiled multiple recourses targeted to the statewide campaign volunteers. Due to her calm determination, ObamaTN has resulted in an incredibly successful grassroots (unofficial) presence statewide and especially in the metro areas of Davidson, Shelby, Knox and Hamilton Counties. Wallace has even gone beyond the metro areas to engage leaders to organize rural areas that are viewed in this cycle to be red. Without her leadership, ObamaTN would merely be a shadow of what it is.
The acceptance and execution of civil duty that Wallace exhibits should serve as not only an example, but also as a clear path to enter for all residents of the United States to be engaged in our country’s future. She serves as a role model to us all – reminding us of the unique character and governmental structure of America – that every single person matters and every single person’s contribution of their civic duty is necessary to the innovative evolution of this nation. Indeed, Tennessee is unusually fortunate to have such a leader within it’s border.
The Tennessee Republicans Sending Mixed Messages On Gas Tax
Posted on June 4, 2008 at 12:43 pmThe Tennessee GOP thinks it is bad to endorse a candidate that believes that a gas tax holiday is unnecessary:
“Gov. Bredesen and Chairman Sasser have endorsed a candidate who believes Americans don’t need a tax break at the gas pump and who believes the best way to deal with a troubled economy is a massive tax hike,” Hobbs said. “They have endorsed a candidate who knows the price of arugula at Whole Foods Market but criticizes rural Americans for ‘clinging’ to God and their Second Amendment rights. They have endorsed for president a candidate who is willing to meet unconditionally with the terrorist leader of Iran but refuses to meet with Gen. David Petreaus, the leader of America’s troops in Iraq, and who believes the best way to defeat our enemy is to run from them.
What party members and the public to imply about the TNGOP’s feelings for Senator Bob Corker after reading this?
Senator Corker, you will remember, vehemently opposes the idea of a gas tax holiday just as Obama does.
McCain, for his part, fired back at Corker for his declaration that the plan was pandering during an appearance at the Ryman on Monday.
Is it not odd that the state party would implicitly back the nominee’s play on a position so publicly in conflict with a member of the Tennessee Republican Congressional delegation? What is the TNGOP position on the gas tax, pro or con?
Could this be a bit of veiled payback, a covert GOP civil war of words, for calling out the TNGOP on the Michelle Obama video?
Or was the line perhaps designed to get back in the good graces of a nominee who no longer wishes to play referee as he did earlier this year over certain press releases the state party was putting out?
Tennessee Democratic Party Begrudges A Man For Making A Living
Posted on May 20, 2008 at 10:27 amIt would seem that Tennessee progressive political party has gotten a bit excited in the rush to castigate the tactics of the Tennessee Republican Party:
The Tennessee Republican Party should be ashamed of the way they have run amok in recent months, drawing unwanted attention to the state of Tennessee.
Going so far as to use a former strip club owner to make their point, the TNGOP betrays their voter’s confidence and further increases the likelihood that their deplorable attack against Sen. Barack Obama’s wife will be one more national news item mischaracterizing the vast majority of Tennesseans.
It appears that the Tennessee Republican Party would rather use a pornographer as their spokesperson than their top elected officials Senator Lamar Alexander and Senator Bob Corker.
Is there something wrong with owning a strip club in the Democratic Party’s estimation? Since when did the party of modern liberalism begrudge a man from making a living this way?
Democrats can point out the hypocrisies here, of course, but do they really want to be using the same “holier than thou” moralizing tactics that the party they so love to hate has made its bread and butter?
UPDATE: Clint Brewer reports that Bob Pope denies being a “pornographer”:
Pope, however, when reached by The City Paper, denied every being involved in pornography.
“I’ve never dealt in any kind of pornography,” Pope said. “I owned that club for four years in the early 1990s. That is over and finished.”
Munday said the Democratic Party was not aware Pope had any interest in producing pornography, adding, “That may not have been the best choice of words.”
“Not that I know of,” Munday said when asked if Pope was involved in pornography. “It’s just that the industries (pornography, strip clubs) seem to be linked.”
An interesting debate, I think. Are strip clubs a form of pornography or are they something else?
NashvillePost.com’s graphic artist Wild Billy Givens offers this on the subject, “Naked chicks dancing on a pole seems like pornography to me.”
Agree or disagree?

Class The Problem With Obama, Not Race?
Posted on May 9, 2008 at 7:15 amGoldnI points to the Economist:
Mr Obama’s main problem with white voters may have more to do with class than race. To the white working man and woman, he has been seen too often as an aloof elitist, who can’t drink whisky, displays a suspicious familiarity with the price of an arugula salad and memorably bowled a deplorable 37 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Toffishness doomed John Kerry; but with Mr Obama, a child of a single mother who sometimes used food stamps, that picture is surely reversible.
Meanwhile, Mr Obama attracts other voters in a way Mrs Clinton never has. For every white bigot who switches sides because of Mr Obama’s skin colour, there is likely to be a white independent—especially a young one—running to support him. The data show that young people, both black and white, prefer Mr Obama. Against Mrs Clinton, Mr McCain might have swept up all the independents; with Mr Obama he will have to split them.
Is the Economist correct that it is class, not race that alienates white working men and women from Obama or is it a more sinister combination of both?
Is it that, on some subconscious level, the white working class don’t appreciate someone of Obama’s race being someone of Obama’s class?
Nipping The Dream Ticket In The Bud
Posted on May 8, 2008 at 2:30 pmBrendan Loy suggests that Barack Obama announce his runningmate sooner rather than later to cut down on all the “dream ticket” talk:
I actually think Obama would be well served to announce his running mate earlier than usual, just to prevent the inevitable Clinton-for-veep speculation from consuming the entire summer, and from further dividing the party when he finally gets around to rejecting what many pundits (and Hillary supporters) will myopically see as the “obvious” choice.
Before the “healing” can truly begin, the last shot must be fired, and that shot will be Obama’s choice of a vice presidential running mate who isn’t named Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Problem with this, of course, is that while it is virtually mathematically impossible for Hillary to win the nomination, it is still possible. Until Obama has mathematically clinched the nomination or Clinton concedes the race, he cannot pick a runningmate. Neither of these things are likely to happen.
Unless the superdelegates come out en mass forcing Clinton’s hand she has no incentive to drop out and until they do Obama cannot be so bold as to announce a runningmate (or likely runningmate) without risking the alienation of some of those superdelegates.
To cut off the speculation, Obama should announce a runningmate the minute after closure is achieved in the primary. Problem is, it is becoming more and more likely that that closure will not happen.
Furthermore, if Clinton actually wants the Vice-Presidency, it is in her interest not to concede until the convention where dealmaking atmosphere and the pressure on Obama to pick her will be at its height.
