Former Rep. Vaughn Sues Ethics Commision

Posted on March 19, 2009 at 12:09 am

You don’t see that everyday:

The lawsuit refers to a complaint Vaughn filed with the Tennessee Ethics Commission, accusing House Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada of Franklin and House Majority Leader Jason Mumpower of Bristol of improper conduct during the election by misleading voters through Web sites under Vaughn’s name.

The commission dismissed the complaint in January. In the lawsuit, Vaughn accuses the commission of not having the proper number of members to make a decision on the complaint, and calls for another review.

“I’m not really against the commission; all I’m asking them for is an investigation of the issues that I brought before them,” Vaughn said.

Hank Hayes reports that Scott Gilmer, an aide to Rep. Glen Casada, will serve no jail time and pay a $50 fine for creating websites attacking Rep. Nathan Vaughn. Gilmer did not admit any guilt as part of his plea.

Former Rep. Nathan Vaughn Is Coming Back

Sooner rather than later it would seem:

“Let’s make this a campaign kickoff,” House Democratic Leader Gary Odom of Nashville told Vaughn’s supporters.

Vaughn said he wasn’t making any announcements about his political future but indicated he will have one.

“I just know that I’m not dead yet,” Vaughn said. “I intend to be involved in the community. I intend to be involved in the state. It is not my intent to basically go away. This is not a celebration of my retirement.”

There was also plenty of venting about the campaign tactics used last fall against Vaughn, Northeast Tennessee’s first African-American state lawmaker, in his narrow loss to Republican Tony Shipley.

GOP Operative Will Plead No Contest To Vaughn Website Shenanigans

Tom Humphrey reports:

A Kingsport lawyer says that Scott Gilmer, a state House Republican Caucus staffer, will enter a plea of nolo contendre, or “no contest,” to misdemeanor charges that he violated state law by unauthorized use of former state Rep. Nathan Vaughn’s name on websites.

Larry Roberts, who has served as attorney for Kingsport Democrat Vaughn, said an agreement was reached for Gilmer to enter the plea in Kingsport General Sessions Court later this month. In effect, the plea means that Gilmer accepts the consequences for breaking the law - a $50 fine plus court costs - without actually admitting guilt.

Embattled East Tennessee Dem Debates

Rep. Nathan Vaughn, targeted by state Republican leaders who believe they can pickup his East Tennessee seat, comes back on those leaders in a debate with his Republican opponent:

“One of the things that I think has been so unfortunate about this campaign is it has just been so negative,” Vaughn, of Kingsport, said. “I’ve had the lieutenant governor (Ron Ramsey of Blountville) say negative things to me as it relates to Highway 126 (Memorial Boulevard). I’ve had the minority leader (Jason Mumpower of Bristol) say that my values aren’t consistent with yours. I’ve been criticized … that somehow I ought to represent inner-city Memphis.”

No, Dang Blam It, The State Representative Is A….

In an article describing a controversy over a misleading “issues sheet” in the race between Rep. Nathan Vaughn and Tony Shipley, Republican House Leader Jason Mumpower puts his lips to the dog whistle:

House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower said the tactic is proving effective in showing voters that Vaughn and Yokley “vote like big-city liberals.”

“They are better suited to be representing inner-city Memphis than the rural hills of East Tennessee,” said Mumpower.

Rep. Nathan Vaughn is, of course, one of the few African-American legislators representing East Tennessee. His district is majority white and Republican.
