President Who?
Posted on May 8, 2009 at 10:12 amMike McWherter has a bit of trouble pronouncing the name of our President at Union University’s College Democrats’ celebration of the first 100 days of Obama.
UPDATE: Amazon’s Kindle also has trouble.
Celebrating The Democratic Gubernatorial Primary
Posted on May 7, 2009 at 2:39 pmWell, actually the President’s 100 Days:
Join the Union University College Democrats for their Celebration of the First 100 Days of the Obama Presidency. The evening will begin with a short business meeting of the Madison County Democratic Party Executive Committee on Union’s campus at 6:00 pm. Starting at 7:30 the newly-elected Madison County Chair, Attorney Robert Hill; TNDP Chair, Chip Forrester; Senator Lowe Finney and gubernatorial candidates Kim McMillan, Ward Cammack, Mike McWherter and Senator Roy Herron will speak.
Very Slightly, I Would Say
Posted on May 1, 2009 at 3:10 pmThe Washington Post says the chances of the Democrat’s holding the executive residence in Tennessee has improved:
6. Tennessee (D): Democrats’ chances of holding the Tennessee governorship improved slightly last week when Mike McWherter, the son of legendary Volunteer State Governor Ned Ray McWherter, announced he would seek the state’s top office. Thanks to his well-known last name, McWherter is the favorite in the Democratic primary although it remains to be seen how good a candidate he will be in his own right. Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam remains the frontrunner for the GOP nod and would start a general election with an advantage over any of the Democratic candidates. (Previous ranking: 5)
UPDATE: So do you agree? Is Mike Wherter the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination?
How ‘Bout Ned Ray You Intend To Be Friends With Him?
Posted on April 26, 2009 at 8:01 pmSenator Roy Herron on the battle of Dresden, Tennessee gubernatorial candidates:
Asked about the announcement by Mike McWherter, son of former Gov. Ned McWherter, that he is also running for governor, Herron said “I’m not running against him. I’m running for governor.”
“We were friends before the election, and I intend to be friends after it. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about my good friend Mike McWherter.”
Fool Me Once, Shame On Me…
Posted on March 16, 2009 at 5:24 pmIlissa Gold is not at all enthused by the prospect of a Mike McWherter gubernatorial candidacy:
I know I can’t be the only Democrat who was more than a little peeved that he waited for so long in 2008 to announce that he would not be running for Senate. It was a costly tease–by that point Bob Tuke had said he wouldn’t challenge McWherter in the primary, but the announcement forced Tuke to rush back in and build up an operation with very little time. I still don’t think Tuke would have necessarily beaten Lamar! even if given a better opportunity, but there’s no doubt that McWherter’s delay hurt his chances.
So what’s he going to do now? Is he actually going to run, or is he going to “wait and see” again?
I have no patience for this level of indecisiveness. I may sound cliche or like a broken record by now, but time is a luxury we do not have in the 2010 cycle. Berke, McMillan, and Ward Cammack may not be household names at this point, but at least they’re out there doing something!
In light of recent history, as of now I don’t consider Mike McWherter a real candidate for Governor; I think that the “insiders” quoted in the article are at best merely speculating. If he is a real candidate, let’s see some papers and some fundraising first.
Sorting Out Stuff
Posted on January 8, 2009 at 6:48 amMike McWherter, a potential candidate for Governor, has no problem with vigorous primary campaigns:
The Dresden businessman said he is willing to join Doug Horne, former state Democratic chairman, and other prospective Democratic candidates in a meeting to discuss the possibility of uniting behind one candidate.
But McWherter also said he thinks primary elections can be “very healthy for any campaign.” He recalled his father’s 1986 primary, wherein he defeated Nashville Mayor Richard Fulton and Public Service Commissioner Jane Eskind, then went on to defeat Republican Winfield Dunn, a former governor, in November.
“We ran a much better campaign in the general election because of that primary. We found out what worked and what didn’t work,” McWherter said.
Bob Tuke’s McWherter Endorsement Implication
Posted on June 1, 2008 at 2:36 pmSean Braisted notes that in the same campaign email where Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Bob Tuke hails his victory in an online poll as an “organizing test”, the campaign also attempts to subtly imply the endorsement of popular Governor Ned Ray McWherter.
Tuke met with Governor McWherter in West Tennessee this week. Tuke and Governor McWherter are old friends, and they talked in detail about how to beat Lamar Alexander in November. Both left the meeting feeling energized about how the Tuke v. Alexander match-up is coming together and they agreed that it’s time to “Take the Hill” on Election Day!
Now as Sean notes, the McWherters, both former Governor Ned and son, Mike, have donated to both Democratic candidates in the race and have issued no public endorsements. However, if one candidate did have a claim to be closer the “McWherter family” as it were, would it be Tuke or opponent Mike Padgett?
Mike Padgett and Gov. McWherter are both Hillary Clinton supporters serving on Clinton’s Tennessee Steering committee. Tuke served, until his announcement for the U.S. Senate, as Barack Obama’s Tennessee Political Director.
Speaking of the that steering committee list, another name would seem to jump out if one were going to play the “endorsement by association” game. Jed Brewer, currently the Padgett for Senate campaign manager, was also intimately involved in Mike McWherter’s abortive campaign for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate this cycle as well as running the incumbent-slaying campaign of state Senator Lowe Finney, a McWherter cousin.
Of course, none of this implies McWherter family endorsement either but it does provide a little context to the Tuke campaign’s attempt to shade a sitdown with an aging former Governor as an endorsement of candidacy.
