Mayor Shines Brightly On Legislative Candidate In Mailer
Posted on August 7, 2008 at 12:53 pmPost Politics has obtained a mailer sent out to targeted voters in the 52nd state house district this past Monday and paid for by the Committee to Elect Mike Stewart featuring what would seem to be an explicit endorsement of the candidacy of Mike Stewart by Mayor Karl Dean.
“Mike has been a friend of mine for a long time. He will make a great public servant.”
Reached for comment Janel Lacey, Press Secretary for the Mayor, confirmed the quote was authentic and used with permission but did not respond to whether the words on the mailer amounted to an endorsement.
Karl Dean, as well as his wife Anne Davis, had been revealed last month as financial backers of the campaign. Stewart’s opponent, Eric Stansell, received a donation from Dean’s runoff opponent in the Mayor’s race, former Congressman Bob Clement.
Stewart faces Stansell today in the Democratic primary for state house in the 52 District.
Kurita Makes A Mail Call
Posted on August 6, 2008 at 7:38 amFollowing up on her negative television ad, Senator Rosalind Kurita, Clarksville Online reports, has issued a mailer to residents of the 22nd district leveling some of the same charges:
The new mailing attempts to paint Barnes as specifically tailoring his law practice to represent spouse abusers, drunk drivers and repeat offenders. Mind you, the yellow pages are filled with ads by a myriad of attorneys offering their services for a wide of array of legal situations. Tim Barnes has no exclusive lock over legal representation for anyone needing it. Thus, it would seem the declared ‘three strikes’ of this flyer are invalid. Voters must be vigilant and diligent in reviewing campaign material that ends up in their mailbox.
This media outlet is reminded of a previous refrain by the senator when her ban proposal failed, “I’m a nurse, not an attorney.” Fortunately for her, we are all U.S. citizens with guaranteed rights and protections of the U.S. Constitution and Tennessee State Constitution.
When contacted for a response to this last minute mailing effort, Barnes, who is challenging Senator Kurita for the Senate District 22 seat, would only say, “Either this an intentional attempt to deceive the public or an appalling display of ignorance of our constitutionally protected rights in a criminal proceeding.”
Blackburn Mails It In
Posted on July 28, 2008 at 10:01 amTom Leatherwood, the insurgent GOP challenger in District 7, attempts to correct his record on health care for illegal immigrants:
Marsha Blackburn has said that I would support “taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants.” This is absolutely not true and she knows it is not true. She is desperate and desperate people say and do desperate things. I am and always have been absolutely opposed to free health care for illegals or a nationalized (socialized) health care system.
If you would like to see the June 4th Commercial Appeal article she refers to on her mail piece, you can click on the link at the end of this article. You will notice that there are absolutely no statements about free healthcare for illegal immigrants. I have also provided a link to a letter to the editor which I wrote addressing the false information she and her staff began putting out weeks ago.
