An Important Message From The Man Who Wrote The Book On White People
Posted on October 14, 2008 at 11:13 pmLiterally. Senator Jim Webb vouches for Barack Obama on guns:
In the ad, Webb, a Vietnam vet and gun enthusiast, recounts his own gun history — his dad gave him his first rifle when he was eight — and goes on to explain that gun-love runs in his veins.
“Our family tradition of hunting and shooting are a way of life to me, and no government will ever take that away,” Webb says. “I am an NRA member and I know that my friend Barack Obama will protect our second amendment rights. So don’t be misled about Barack Obama…I trust him to protect our right to keep and bear arms.”
The repetition of the word “trust” is interesting, as is Webb’s description of Obama as “my friend.” Webb’s military and gun cred are being pressed into service to deflect attacks on Obama as a risky unknown, and Webb is personally vouching for his fellow Senator.
Not How He Rolls
Posted on July 22, 2008 at 6:57 amSenator Jim Webb explains why he could not and would not be Barack Obama’s second banana:
“I was saying from day one I really wasn’t interested,” said Webb, once considered a frontrunner to be Obama’s second in command. “People would ask me about this and I would say I have been in elected office for two years and I have a great staff around me and we are focusing on issues I can talk about openly, which would be hard to do if I were part of an administration. And there was so much speculation after my book was published and the primary had passed that I thought I would clear the air.”
Reminded by Rose that his assets - an ability to reach working class Democrats and carry his home state of Virginia - were important Obama needs, Webb responded: “Both of those considerations are still doable to the extent that they are true with me campaigning with and for Sen. Obama wherever he wants me. I think Virginia is very much in play and I will do everything I can to help him out. But it is a life decision and being inside an administration is a totally different phenomenon then being in the senate in terms of speaking openly on certain issues. I’m happy where I am.”
Veep Not Worth The Vet
Posted on July 7, 2008 at 6:33 pmWhy Jim Webb took himself out of the Veepstakes:
A Democrat close to Webb confirms that a request for documents preceded his declaration to the Obama campaign. The Democrat said that Webb did not want to relive the vigors of a campaign so soon after his election to the Senate.
Webb’s statement suggests that Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, the two leaders of the team, had received instructions from Sen. Obama to vet a number of finalists, including Webb.

Jim Webb Will Not Be Obama’s Cracker Bait
Posted on at 3:04 pmYou don’t get more unequivocal than this (via Braisted):
“Last week I communicated to Senator Obama and his presidential campaign my firm intention to remain in the United States Senate…Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for Vice President.”
Marc Ambinder asks a good question. Nobody actually refuses a Vice Presidential nomination so why issue this statement? Is Webb trying to save face after finding out he was not on the short list?
Did Obama after deciding not to pick Webb counsel Webb to make this statement to counteract criticism that might have followed him passing over such an obvious choice?
Why did this decision have to be made public?
Obama’s problem’s with Appalachian voters are well documented. Webb’s presence on the ticket would have gone a long way towards assuaging the fears of the “cracker” vote. There is no candidate I can think of who could have accomplished this quite like Webb.
This statement, at this time, is very, very curious.
Pelosi Gets You White Working-Class Ethnic Catholics In Ohio?
Posted on May 22, 2008 at 1:02 pmThat’s what Tim Chavez seems to be saying and he doesn’t appear to be joking:
Obama is going to need a lot of help from a running mate in the general election. All the males being cited only help in one state and with one constituency. Pelosi appeals to Catholics, of which she is one, and that will make a difference in Pennsylvania and Ohio. And, of course, she is a woman. And they do most of the voting in every state in this country.
Pelosi can be more powerful as VP, particularly with foreign policy as her trips to Syria, Iraq and Tibet already have shown. She can also most effectively steer Obama’s legislative agenda through the Congress as Senate president with a vote on ties and with her long-time contacts in the House. I’m sure she is owed a lot of favors.
Coop Floats Nunn For Veep
Posted on May 20, 2008 at 6:54 amNot surprisingly considering the history, Rep. Jim Cooper is no fan of the idea of a “dream ticket” between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton:
“I think you’d have to go for a fresh face,” said Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), an Obama supporter, adding that it would make sense for Obama to choose from among the party’s “wide range of experienced foreign policy and national security experts. Sam Nunn, he’d be my first choice.”
