Maynard Wants A Meeting

Posted on December 18, 2008 at 10:29 am

Councilman wants to convene a Council working session on Metro economic development on Jan. 6, 2009.

The January meeting would be a followup on Council’s earlier public forum. Maynard told us he wants the Council, itself, to explore innovative ways to increase sales-tax revenue; generate non-tax revenue (e.g., from advertising or naming rights linked to public venues and assets); and, ensuring that Metro fees and procedures are not unduly hampering developers and small business, generally.

The Mark Of A Rising Political Star

Amy Griffith reports that new school board member Alan Coverstone had folks on both sides of the rezoning controversey believing he was “on their side”:

Coverstone said Thursday – as he has told The City Paper since July – that he is not in favor of immediately revisiting the plan. Instead, he said, he wants to immediately implement some of the school improvements promised by the plan as it was passed.

“I just get incredibly uncomfortable with the ‘revisiting’ word, because for too many people, ‘revisit’ means, ‘Throw out the rezoning lines,’” Coverstone said. “I think that if we start discussing and debating lines right away that that will guarantee that we will not follow through on the commitments to improve schools this year. I will not accept not following through on the commitments to improve the schools this year.”

According to Maynard, Coverstone’s stance is a surprise.

“Alan never once told me that he would be against revisiting the rezoning plan,” Maynord said Thursday.

But both Maynard and Coverstone — who say they’re friends — expressed the belief that they’ll find ways to work together in the coming years.

Maynard Contra Alma

Councilman and Democratic Executive Committee member Jerry Maynard comments on Alma Sanford’s insinuation that sexism played a role in the decision to declare Rosalind Kurita’s 19 vote victory “incurably uncertain”:

I serve as the Democratic State Executive Committee member for District 19 and voted to uphold the election results for Sen. Kurita based upon the evidence and arguments that were presented last Saturday.

I am a male committee member and Sen. Kurita’s gender had nothing to do with my vote nor the vote of my fellow committee members.  The TN Democratic Party conducted a fair hearing that allowed due process for both candidates with Chairman Gray Sasser doing a good job given the circumstances.

I resent the allegations and inference of sexism on Ms. Sanford’s part and I assure you that the Democratic Party is unified to Change the direction of this country by electing Obama/Biden to the White House.

If you believe that McCain/Palin will further the fight for gender equality after reviewing McCain’s record and Palin’s position statements, then you may have succumbed to emotional hysteria rather than rational thinking.
