Two Years Of 287(g)

Posted on April 16, 2009 at 9:04 am

The Davidson County Sheriff has released a report on the result and progress of Nashville’s adoption of a federal program to identify and remove criminal illegal aliens from our city. From the report’s conclusion:

Partnering with the federal government has been the right move for Davidson County:

  • 46 percent decline in percentage of illegal aliens committing crimes;
  • 31 percent decline in the percentage of foreign born arrested – showing no
    indication of profiling by arresting agencies;
  • 70 gang members removed from Davidson County
  • 5,300 illegal aliens set for removal have more than 20,000 current and
    previous charges;
  • 75 percent of vehicular homicides since inception of 287(g) would have been
    prevented if misdemeanor offenders were removed previously;
  • 40 percent have been arrested previously;

Sheriff Daron Hall agrees that more should be done at the federal level such as enforcing the border. Additionally, he believes 287(g) is a public safety tool - not a solution to this country’s illegal immigration problem. Hall also supports recommendations made by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, that the program needs more oversight and consistency across the board. In addition, he believes transparency is a necessary function for a program such as 287(g).

Over the past two years, there have been challenges; however, the DCSO has handled the implementation of 287(g) effectively and professionally and strives to operate a model program.

Sheriff Daron Hall writes Metro Council members to tell them he didn’t know what the Council of Conservative Citizens was about when he went to speak to them:

Dear Friends,

Late last week, I received an inquiry about one of the many public speaking engagements I have attended over the last two years regarding the 287(g) immigration enforcement program. It was only at that particular time that I learned of views supported by the group I spoke to in November.

In an ongoing effort to educate the community since the program’s implementation in 2007, I have spoken to more than 100 organizations regarding 287 (g). The request that came from the Middle Tennessee Council of Conservative Citizens was no different. They made a request to my assistant asking me to speak about our program and it was scheduled. I went to Piccadilly cafeteria, explained the program, answered a few questions of this group of 20, and then left. At no time before, during, or after did I have any idea what views this organization supported. Keep in mind, I was speaking about the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office immigration program during this meeting - there was never any discussion of their purpose or mission.

Understand my reputation both professionally and personally as well as the reputation of the DCSO is of the utmost importance and I would never knowingly tarnish that reputation. I have now implemented necessary steps to avoid similar problems in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

I appreciate your support and understanding.

Sincerely,
Daron

Sheriff Daron Hall Spoke To The Council Of Conservative Citizens

Posted on January 30, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Dude, seriously. Have you not read a news article in the past ten years?

Maybe in 1999 you could have claimed ignorance, not in 2009.

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall was a featured speaker for a nationalist white hate group that condemns blacks, immigration and is in favor of preserving the country’s “cultural and racial integrity.”

Hall spoke about his department’s controversial 287(g) federal immigration program at a Nov. 22 dinner of the Council of Conservative Citizens held at the Piccadilly Cafeteria on Murfreesboro Pike in Nashville.

The Council of Conservative Citizens opposes “mixing of the races,” homosexuality and nonwhite immigration — legal and illegal, according to its statement of principles on its Web site.The St. Louis-based group stems from the the racist, anti-integrationist White Citizens’ Councils of the 1950s and 1960s, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Labor Day Linkgate: The Saga Continues

Katie Allison Granju comments on a reporter from her hometown paper accusing a blogger of bias:

First of all, bloggers don’t have to be objective. Second of all, this is pretty ironic, coming from a guy who - as a straight news reporter - covers the Muslim beat for a newspaper while at the same time writing incredibly biased, anti-Muslim rhetoric on his personal blog, and as a poster at sites like Free Republic.

Given what Mosely clearly believes personally, and has expressed publicly about the hot-button issue of immigration. I continue to find it absolutely incredible that he has been given this beat to cover. It’s a sensitive issue, and it needs to be covered with extreme thoughtfulness and sensitivity.

Reporter Catches Fire For Linking To Blogger’s MySpace

Posted on August 4, 2008 at 9:07 am

The controversy over a Tyson Foods plant swapping out Labor Day for a Muslim holiday in deference to the Islamic presence in its work force took an interesting turn over the weekend.

Blogger Christy Frink, who took issue with a newspaper story on the subject and the accompanying comments beneath it, was “outed” as an employee of Catholic Charities of Tennessee by the reporter for the Shelbyville Times Gazette covering the story.

In an extensive blog post on the controversy and his experience covering related issues, reporter Brian Mosely, attempting to turn charges of bias on him around to his critics, used Frink’s MySpace, where she listed her employer, to call into question her objectivity on immigration issues.

The blogosphere was not pleased with the tactic.

Chris Wage:

The Times-Gazette is doing a fine job of reporting on this issue, but I’d advise Mr. Mosley to lay off the personal redirection and speculation. I get the impression he’s imagining he’s on the cusp of some pulitzer-winning expose of a grand conspiracy of charities to bring refugees into this country. Or something. He’s either doing so out of ignorance to the economic complexity and sheer magnitude of the situation or he’s being willfully naive in order to, as Christy suggested, stir up controversy with the local yokels (which he certainly has).

Stick to calling for reform, avoid insinuating vested interest and conspiracy on behalf of the organizations trying to help these people. Someone might mistake you for an insane person.

Mike Byrd:

Given that a reporters’ claim to objectivity is his or her ability to interview and to portray meaning or facts as close to the subject as possible, it might have helped Mr. Mosley to have done an interview with the blogger about her work before jumping to the conclusion that the vocation of social work itself engenders blinders.

Newscoma:

First of all, I have worked in Social Work myself. I wish that Mosely had linked to that site instead of her MySpace page, but that’s just me. He obviously took the time to dig around about Christy, but he linked to the wrong page if you ask me. That didn’t set well with me at all but he made his choice and put his name on it. He should have linked to the site he referenced regarding her employment. That way it would have validated not only her but him. She might have information that he doesn’t. See where I’m getting at.

It should be noted that the reporter in question, Brian Mosely, was a “victim” of what could be seen as a similar “outing” back in January when WBIR blogger Katie Granju linked up to Mosely’s personal blog to call into question his objectivity in his previous reporting.

The Politics Of Fear

Truman Bean stands in support of a Williamson County Sheriff candidate’s use of a flier some say is racist:

Tommy Campsey has NOT backed down from his truthful ad on the detrimental effects of illegal immigration.

The shadowy figure on his mailer represents criminal activity, the very first act committed by those that choose to skirt our nations entry requirements.

An issue that is very relevant for the head of the sheriff’s department, one that has already applied to be part of the 287g program. An enforcement tool that illegals fear and one that is clearly making a difference.

Just another reason to push me MUCH closer to voting for Tommy Campsey.

After seeing this story last night, Mr Campsey has separated himself from the crowded sheriff candidate contest….. IN A VERY GOOD WAY!

As American As A Taco: TNGOP Praises Cinco De Mayo

Posted on May 5, 2008 at 11:42 am

The Tennessee Republican Party celebrates Cinco De Mayo as a reminder of the importance of protecting a peoples’ culture:

“Celebrating ethnic and cultural pride within the context of the American story is as American as baseball, apple pie - and tacos - and Cinco de Mayo has grown in popularity here as more Mexicans have decided to join the American story,” said Robin Smith, chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party. “We honor the national pride displayed on this day of festivity and the importance of protecting a nation’s heritage and culture in order to ensure its ongoing freedom.”

Of course, the Tennessee Republican Party hasn’t always been so high on expressions of ethnic and cultural pride.

In a press release, which was uniformly derided by Tennesseans of all political persuasions two months ago, the Tennessee Republican Party chastised Barack Obama for wearing ethnic garb when visiting a foreign land and chided his parent’s decision to give a young Barack Obama an Arabic middle name.
