Brother, Can You Spare A Dollar
Posted on February 6, 2009 at 10:40 amThe progressive blogosphere has reached and exceeded ever goal set for itself thus money-wise in its fundraiser designed to help new TNDP chair Chip Forrester but they are falling short in one area:
While our original mission to attract a high number of small donations seems to be realized by the fact that our average donation is under $30, we did not quite meet our goal of attracting 100 donors. So, before we make the donation, we call upon 21 more donors to give whatever they can to help us hit 100 on the donor meter. If you can contribute $1, $5, $10, $15 or whatever to help us see Chip In through to 100 donors, you would be helping us claim a spot for liberals at the table when party decisions get made. Just click on the ActBlue thermometer banner in the righthand column to contribute.
Now They Can Buy The Food For A Real Fundraiser
Posted on February 4, 2009 at 11:32 amThe big netroots effort spearheaded by Knoxville blogger R. Neal to raise funds for the new grassroots Tennessee Democratic Party headed by Chip Forrester has reached its goal. The benchmark was set at $1,000 by Friday. That point was reached in just a few hours this morning.
UPDATE: R. Neal:
Wow, Tennessee Democrats have stepped up to support the Tennessee Democratic Party, and progressive Tennessee bloggers met our three-business-day fundraing goal of $1000 in only FOUR HOURS AND 20 MINUTES!
Thanks to everyone who contributed. Because of the amazing response, we are doubling down and raising our goal to $2000 by the close of business Friday. We also want to get at least 50 individual grassroots/netroots contributors, so tell your friends and neighbors.
Thanks again to everyone!
Write-In Checks: GOP Committee Chairs To Host Fundraiser For Kurita
Posted on September 24, 2008 at 10:56 am
In a move which will no doubt confirm her detractors deepest-held suspicions and have supporters noting her lack of options, Senator Rosalind Kurita will hold a fundraiser for her embryonic write-in campaign on October 1st — featuring Republican headliners.
The event, which suggests a donation of $500, will be held at the Cherokee Equity Corporation and boasts as hosts every Republican state Senate committee chair save one, Senator Jim Tracy.
When asked why the Senator was the only GOP committee chair not on the host list, spokesman Clint Hall explained, “As you know, Sen. Tracy is up for reelection this year as well and that is where our focus is.”
Tracy, while still very much favored in his race, has been targeted by Democrats who believe his opponent, Jean Anne Rodgers, has an outside shot at defeating the incumbent.
When asked for comment on her elephant heavy host committee, the newly independent Kurita said only, “I am very pleased to be receiving support from so many Senators and friends.”
Senator Rosalind Kurita’s August 7th primary win over fellow Democrat attorney Tim Barnes was ruled “incurably uncertain” at an eight-hour meeting of the Tennessee Democratic Executive Committee on Sept 13th.
With election then voided, the task of choosing a nominee in District 22 fell to a tri-county convention of the Democratic executive committees in Montgomery, Cheatham and Houston counties.
That convention voted 61-4 to install rival Barnes as the nominee Sept. 17th.
Senator Kurita filed, just before deadline, as an official write-in candidate for the seat she currently holds Sept. 15th.

Gore Wants You To Open Up Your Wallets For Tuke
Posted on August 18, 2008 at 4:11 pmOn Bob Tuke’s diary page at Daily Kos, Al Gore takes his endorsement of U.S. Senate candidate Bob Tuke a step farther:
Today, I announced my endorsement of Bob Tuke to be the next U.S. Senator from my home state of Tennessee. I have known Bob for a long time, and I am glad to call him a close friend. Bob Tuke is hard-working, hard-nosed, and practical, which has served him well as a Marine combat veteran, an accomplished and respected attorney, and as former Chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party. Bob faces a challenging general election, but he has the grit and determination to get things done in November and increase the Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate. I encourage all of you to contribute to his campaign today and help elect Bob Tuke as the next Senator from the great state of Tennessee.
TNGOP Communications Director Defends Closing The Statesman’s Dinner
Posted on July 24, 2008 at 10:07 am“I am paying for this microphone, Mr. Green!”
Bill Hobbs chastises the media and blogger coverage of the news that, in a historical departure, the TNGOP will close this weekend’s Karl Rove-keynoted Statesman’s Dinner to the press:
[T]he suggestion that it should be open to the public because it is being held in a city convention center built with public funds is, frankly, silly. The Tennessee GOP rented the building - taxpayers aren’t paying for the building that night, the TN GOP is. That gives us the right to control access. And there are countless events held every month at city-owned convention centers across the state that aren’t open to the press. Weddings and business conventions, for example.
The Tennessee Republican Party from time to time holds events that are open to the media. In fact, we even invite the media to them.

No Tickee, No Rovee: TNGOP Statesman’s Dinner Closed To Press
Posted on at 7:22 amUnlike the Tennessee Democratic Party’s annual fundraiser, Jackson Day, the Tennessee GOP confirms that their annual money-raking event known as the Statesman’s Dinner will be closed to the press. TNGOP Communications Director Bill Hobbs:
Like most political fundraisers, the Statesmen’s Dinner is a private ticketed event. No one without a ticket gets in. It’s standard operating procedure for most every political fundraiser.
The keynote speaker this year is “The Architect” Karl Rove. At last year’s event at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, then Presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke to the assembled Tennessee Republicans in the wake of speculation of Fred Thompson’s presidential bid. This year, the event will be held at the Nashville Convention Center downtown.
UPDATE 8:19AM: The Associated Press reports on the historical departure.
