Do Senate Democrats Have An Agenda?

Posted on March 10, 2009 at 1:03 pm

Apparently not, but goshdarn it, they are sure in search of one.

A memo sent out about a bit over an hour ago by Senator Roy Herron, chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus, calls attention to the need for a “theme” to define their “brand” as Senate Democrats. Several strategies are then thrown out to achieve the maximum publicity, ya know, after they figure out what it is they are about. From the memo:

Andy Berke was approached by a Chattanooga Times reporter yesterday who said the House Democrats have made their message clear, but he is not hearing one from the Republicans or us.

What about an overarching theme or themes that we want as our brand?

It has been suggested that we focus on the middle class. If so, what are the major issues under that heading that we want to roll out to the media over the next few weeks?

Marsha Blackburn: “Listen Up, Boys!”

Marsha Blackburn speaks to the delegates of Republican National Convention:

We are the gun totin’, God fearin,’ flag wavin’ Americans who are excited to see two crack shots on the ticket with the status quo in their sights. We don’t need to elect someone to install an ATM machine on Pennsylvania Avenue that debits your liberty to fund wasteful programs, and won’t do the one thing that can drive down gas prices.

Marsha Makes Her Presence Felt

Despite being unceremonious dropped from a main podium speaking role, Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s voice is still being heard at the Republican National Convention:

Originally, she was scheduled to speak at the convention on Tuesday, but her slot was canceled because of adjustments to the convention schedule caused by Hurricane Gustav.

It is not clear whether she is going to speak today, the final day of the convention.

At the news conference with conservative Republican female leaders, including business executive Carly Fiorina, Blackburn joined in blasting the media for their portrayal of Palin.

“The media continues to attack conservative women to seek a way to diminish their records and to demonize their actions,” she said. “Let’s keep the focus on the issues.”

Gustav May Leave Blackburn On The Outside

From Theobold:

Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s scheduled speech at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday was canceled as the party continued to adjust its schedule because of Hurricane Gustav. Spokesman Claude Chafin said it was not certain whether the Brentwood Republican would get a speaking spot during the convention, which ends Thursday.

Marsha Maintaining Her Brand

Posted on September 1, 2008 at 9:38 am

Blake Fontenay discusses what the future may hold for conservative firebrand Congressman Marsha Blackburn:

She could run for governor in two years. However, it’s interesting that former U.S. senator Bill Frist, another potential gubernatorial candidate, decided to endorse Blackburn in her race against Leatherwood.

That could indicate that the two of them have come to some arrangement about not running against each other.

Blackburn could also have her eye on a U.S. Senate seat, although Bob Corker was just elected two years ago and Lamar Alexander is running for re-election this year. A few years from now, who knows?

If McCain wins the presidency, Sabato thinks there’s at least an outside chance he could appoint Blackburn to some job in his administration.

Or Blackburn could stay in the House, rise through the ranks and hope Republicans eventually recapture the majority there.

One thing seems clear: Whatever she decides to do, she won’t be doing it quietly.
