Blame Canada

Posted on October 14, 2008 at 10:43 am

The TNGOP, as well as the Ken Yager for Senate campaign, strike back about a direct mail piece making the rounds calling out Yager for going to Canada:

What Ruppe doesn’t say is that Yager traveled to Toronto in 2004 to recruit businesses to Roane County on a trade mission sponsored by a member of Democratic Governor Phil Bredesen’s administration, Tennessee’s Commissioner of Economic and Community Development, Matt Kisber. Yager made the trip with the president of the Oak Ridge Economic Partnership and 40 other economic development representatives from Tennessee including city and county mayors. (The Oak Ridger, September 28, 2004)

“Ken Yager spent his 24 years as Roane County Executive working to bring good jobs to the area,” said Yager campaign manager Robert Kuykendall. “Apparently, Becky Ruppe does not believe that recruiting these jobs is time well spent for a county executive.”

Seee the full mail piece at this link.

The Democratic response courtesy of Mark Brown:

“Ken Yager believes that “economic development” means wasting taxpayer money on luxury hotels and meals at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and Morton’s. Most Tennesseans believe that economic development is about hard work and communication, not living high on the hog on the taxpayer’s dime.”

So You’re Open To Voting For Ramsey Or Are You Just Flappin’ Your Gums?

12th District state Senate candidate Becky Ruppe sounds off with some very Kuritaesque rhetoric on partisanship in Nashville:

Further, Ruppe faults Yager for being an “extreme partisan,” while depicting herself as bipartisan. Some fellow Democrats are annoyed to learn that she has voted in Republican primaries, Ruppe says.

She professes some annoyance of her own over “all this hoopla” over partisan control of the state Senate, which now has 16 Republicans, 16 Democrats and one Independent.

The outcome of the 12th District Senate contest between Ruppe and Yager could well decide which party controls the Senate next year. The district covers Campbell, Fentress, Morgan, Rhea, Roane and Scott counties and is represented by Sen. Tommy Kilby, D-Wartburg, who did not seek re-election.

“I have the ability to go to Nashville and sit down with people, no matter what party they’re in, and make things happen for our district,” she says.

Perpendicular Prospects

New voters energized by Barack Obama will likely not help Obama win the state here in Tennessee but they may not be useful in turning the tide in crucial down ticket races either:

Robin Smith, who heads the Tennessee Republican Party, doubts that enthusiasm for Obama will help legislative races. Most of the new voters are in urban areas and college campuses, she said, while many of the key legislative races this fall are in rural areas.

“I think the state Democrats are in a very tough quandary, because the top of their ticket message is absolutely perpendicular to what their state party is trying to pull off,” she said.

Hayden acknowledges that Tennessee is generally not a state in which state candidates benefit from top-ticket turnout, because “our voters split their tickets, and they do so a lot.”

Interesting contributions of $300 and $250 dollars respectively from the disclosures of new found champion of the people against Big Oil Becky Ruppe:

TENNESSEE OIL MARKETERS PAC

P.O. BOX 101334, 430 ENOS REED DR.
NASHVILLE, TN 37224

BONAR, JOHN

50 RIVERS RUN WAY
OAK RIDGE, TN 37830

ATLAS OIL

To be fair, of course, neither TOMA or Atlas Oil is under investigation for price gouging but still interesting.

Chris Sanders is upset with 12 District state Senate candidate Becky Ruppe for coming out against gay marriage:

Ruppe’s ad is pernicious for at least one of two reasons. Either she is misleading the voters into thinking that marriage is an issue in Tennessee or she is whipping up prejudice against GLBT people to bolster her conservative credentials.

Or, recognizing that she is a woman running in a conservative, rural district, Ruppe is doing everything she can to try and keep this potentially swing district in Democratic hands.

Full Of Numbers And Percentages, Signifying Nothing

Ed Cromer reports on a poll taken in the 14th State Senate District:

A poll taken June 22-23 for Republican candidate Ken Yager shows him leading Democrat Becky Ruppe in the District 12 senatorial race 35% to 21%. But 48% of voters are undecided. Yager, who was Roane County executive for 24 years, enjoys a name-recognition advantage over Morgan County Executive Ruppe, but most voters don’t know either of them.

The poll found 48% of likely voters favoring John McCain for president, versus 33% for Barack Obama.

The sample size was 300 voters, stratified by county to reflect historical voter turnout. The margin of error is 5.6%. The survey was taken by pollster Wes Anderson.

Polling Party Strength

Sean Braisted hears that Tennessee Democratic legislative candidates are strong but without the hard data he remains unconvinced:

I’ve heard stories about how great some of these candidates are in the rural areas of the state, but without poll numbers or some other objective measurement to back them up, I have no way of knowing whether they are blowing smoke or telling the truth.

Senator Ruppe, Senator Ruppe Votes….

The Tennessee Republican Party issues a press release today in which attempt to poke a hole in the pro-gun, anti-abortion candidacy of Becky Ruppe in the 12th Senate District:

“Becky Ruppe would vote for a Democrat like Jim Kyle of Memphis – a pro-abortion, pro-gay-marriage, pro-income tax, anti-gun rights liberal - to lead the Senate,” said Tennessee Republican Party Communications Director Bill Hobbs. “We believe the majority of people of the 12th senate district want a senator who shares their conservative views on abortion, gun rights, marriage and the income tax and won’t cast a hypocritical leadership vote for a Memphis liberal who doesn’t.”

The party of course suggests you vote for Ken Yaeger who would presumably vote for Ramsey. Then again, wasn’t it a pro-gun woman Democrat who gave us Ramsey in the first place?
