A Plan That Didn’t Come Together

Mike Morrow on one of the many dreams of tea party convention organizer Judson Phillips:

Phillips said convention organizers wanted to attract Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine to address the people at the event at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center.

Phillips said the Republicans cited scheduling issues when he tried to get Steele to come to Nashville.

“We officially sent Michael Steele an invitation. I also called up to the DNC to find out who to talk to to invite DNC Chairman Tim Kaine. We never got even a return phone call from the DNC,” Phillips said.

“What we wanted to do was not have them down as speakers like the others. We wanted to set up a town hall type thing,” Phillips said. “What we really wanted was both of them. We wanted to allow them to say a few words to the people, then let the people address them, either ask questions or present their concerns, so it could really be a dialogue.

“So it’s really regrettable that they did not come.”

Better yet, Phillips could have set up dunking booths in the parking lot. That might have raised more money and been less painful to the party chairs than letting Tea Partiers address them and “voice their concerns.”
