Potential Republican Candidate In The Eighth Explains His Past Donations To Tanner

From Nicholas Beadle:

I talked with Kirkland about the post on Wednesday. He said that he has given to “friends and conservatives” outside the GOP in the past, but that, cumulatively, the vast majority of his political donations have gone to Republicans.

According to an online donation database linked in Erickson’s post, Kirkland has donated $500 total to Tanner in the past decade — $250 in 2000 and $250 again in 2004. During the same period, he has donated thousands to the Republican Party and GOP candidates including Lamar Alexander, Marsha Blackburn and Bob Corker.

Tanner is a founder of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog coalition of congressional Democrats.

I e-mailed Erickson to arrange a phone interview this morning but have not immediately gotten a response.

Kirkland also said he is more concerned about the the National Republican Congressional Commitee’s heavy promotion of Fincher than the blog post, but noted that he is willing to discuss his views and qualifications with RedState’s writers and editors if they are interested.

“They have a perfect right to endorse Mr. Fincher, they have a perfect right to endorse me,” Kirkland said. “I don’t have any complaint about what the RedState blog has to do.”
