Ney To Preside Over Hearing To Oust County Party Vice Chair
Posted on November 24, 2009 at 2:42 pmPost Politics has obtained a document explaining the process that the Davidson County Republican Party will use tonight in deciding whether to unseat Matt Collins as first vice chair.
Because county chairwoman Kathleen Starnes is one of those seeking Collins’ ouster, she has excused herself from presiding over the hearing. In accordance with state party bylaws regarding removal, the state Republican chair has chosen former GOP operative and attorney Paul Ney to preside over the hearing.
According to the memo written by Ney outlining the process, Starnes will open the executive committee meeting and take up the removal motion. She then will hand off the hearing to Ney.
Once a quorum is established, the meeting then will go into executive (read:closed) session. Only the executive committee, Ney, and each sides’ advocate along with any authorized representatives of the state party can be present.
Each side will have an hour to present its position including a five-minute opening and 10-minute closing statement.
Unlike a legal proceeding, witnesses will not take an oath, and hearsay evidence is allowed. No witness can be compelled to answer any questions.
At the request of any member of the executive committee, the final vote can be taken by secret ballot.

Secret ballots? That sounds like the republicans for sure, maybe they can vote electronically. LOL! Good luck in the Star Chamber Matt.
I imagine the writing is on the wall; however, as one who thinks impeachment is too extreme a measure, the party could not have chosen a more even-handed arbiter than Paul. Hopefully, justice will prevail.
And what’s the “sounds like Republicans” bullshit?!! We neither invented the internet nor the world’s greatest policy scam to date.
The intent of algore’s environmental, ponze scheme makes the war look like a trip to Disneyworld. The Democrat Party can bend over and kiss its ass goodbye.
What’s it with the picture? Did that come with the memo? Or did you guys used to date?
I think Liz Garrigan used to run that pic of Ney over at Pith.
All Collins needs is nine votes to stay in- I’d expect he gets them.
What can’t the Chipinista screw up?! Oh, wait…
Ney is one of a small group of Republicans in Tennessee who is reasoned and fair; he’s not one of these nutbag teabaggers. Far from it. So my guess is that the hearing will be run smoothly and fairly.

Seriously, AC, what is the point of the picture? If you’re going to include it, you should justify it.
Paul is incredibly well respected across the political spectrum. He was charged with a delicate task and you put this up. Why?
I’m sure you could have found a stock photo from one of his previous firms, or perhaps the one from his time working for the Department of Defense. Or maybe you could have chosen not to post a photo like you do on 99.9% of your posts. But you chose to include this one. Again, I ask why? It must be because your mission in life is to stay on Liz Garrigan’s good side. A worthwhile endeavor, indeed.
In my limited experience with Mr. Ney last evening he was fair, intellectually honest, and has a great deal of integrity. There were many errors in the proceedings however I believe that Mr. Ney did his best good-faith effort to ensure a proper hearing.
Matthew, it was indeed poor judgment for A.C. to have used the above picture. There’s no context for it, and it doesn’t serve the content. I took that picture some 11 years ago when Ney and I were part of a group running a marathon in Dublin — and once ran it with context as part of a playful item on the Scene’s blog Pith in the Wind. A straightforward photo, or none at all, would have been appropriate, but certainly not this.
I like that other photo. Seriously.
