Jim Cooper Is Busy

Posted on November 19, 2009 at 9:30 am

A constituent says he never got his one on one with his congressman on health care reform:

Mr. Cooper said he would not have town-hall meetings this past summer because he did not support this legislation.

He preferred one-on-one meetings with voters. Well, I applied and three weeks later, after two separate inquiries about my meeting time, nothing. I even created my own town-hall meeting on Sept. 1 here in Mt. Juliet and invited Mr. Cooper. It took a week for his scheduler to figure out he was busy and “just couldn’t make it.”

There were two basic problems with your request of Mr. Cooper:
    1) He doesn’t want to lower himself to leave his Belle Meade area home (near where all of the prominent Democrats - the mayor, the governor, the former VP - live) to go to Mt. Juliet; and
    2) He is in a safe and secure Democrat district where he has no fear of losing his seat, so he doesn’t need to talk to you.

I (a Cooper constituent who lives outside of Davidson County) fear Frankly2 is correct on his point 2. I’ve been a fan of Jim Cooper, because until this session he has pushed fiscal responsibility. But no one who voted for that trillion-dollar monstrosity of a health bill can honestly call himself a budget hawk. So, despite the odds against it, I hope come next November there are enough residents of TN-5 who feel as I do to bring the congressman home.

I think both of you will be in a different district by 2012, but I share your frustration with Rep. Cooper’s lack of direct contact with his constituents, and I live about a mile and a half from him.

But the both the Wilson County and Cheatham respondents should feel a little more sanguine. I’m pretty well convinced that Cooper voted for Stupak as a poison pill. I would not be surprised to see him vote against whatever comes out of reconciliation. Then he’ll have another set of angry constituents, and a possible primary challenge in a year when he can’t count on crossover votes to save him.
