Comptroller’s Office Payroll Move Questioned

Posted on November 17, 2009 at 9:27 am

From WSMV:

Until Nov. 1 of this year, the staff at the state comptroller’s office was getting paid monthly but recently made the transition to the twice-monthly system.

It’s a move that cost taxpayers $1.1 million.

“This is what most of state government has done since the ’70s,” said state Comptroller Justin Wilson. “Our office had not done this. The way our current system is inefficient, we have go back and change our, review our records, make estimates and really just operate more efficiently and make sure that our records are accurate.”

Capitol insiders agree the shift to the twice monthly system is smart. The issue is the timing.

Channel 4 has learned the nearly 500 employees in the comptroller’s office were given an extra two weeks of pay. Employees were issued the checks so there wouldn’t be a gap in pay during the transition from a monthly to twice-monthly system.

But the state hasn’t made any efforts to take back those extra funds.

500 employees in Comptrollers office? This change has
been done before by the state and was handled very differently! Those personell that were in true financial hardships were ask to work with their
payroll offices to make gradual changes but certainly
not given 2 weeks free pay. Mr. Wilson(Former
Don Sundquist flunky) instead decides he will use
the occasion to give all 500 employees a silent 2 week
pay raise! This, of course, as all other state
employees are going without raise and facing layoffs.
I suggest all 3 constitutional offices also share in
any of these layoffs. The State should require all
that received this unearned extra pay to repay it if
only $10.00 per pay period! That would be the fair
    and ethical thing to require.
