Blountville – Sen. Roy Herron (D-Dresden) decisively won the second Democratic straw poll in the race for Governor on Saturday. The poll was held at an event hosted by the Sullivan County Democratic Party in Blountville.
With his strong win in the first straw poll in Rutherford County, Sen. Herron has now won the first two Democratic straw polls by large margins.
“I am humbled and grateful to the voters of Sullivan County,” Sen. Herron said. “The people here in northeast Tennessee are just like those I represent in middle and west Tennessee: hard-working, family-loving, God-fearing people. I’m grateful for their kindness to me today.”
Sen. Herron received more than 57% of the votes cast and more than the other four candidates combined. Full results are below:
1. Sen. Roy Herron – 85
2. Mike McWherter – 20
3. Sen. Jim Kyle – 12
4. Ward Cammack – 11
5. Kim McMillan – 9
6. Undecided - 12

I went to the event as an “undecided.” I wanted to hear the speeches first, then cast my vote. After hearing everyone, I made up my mind and went to submit my ballot. The man told me voting was closed and most people had voted before. He also told me it didn’t matter anyway because it wouldn’t make a difference. How’s that for democracy?
It seems that Herron continues to show the most organizational capacity and enthusiasm from folks attending these Democratic straw polls. I’m interested to see if that holds true at the straw poll in Chattanooga on Monday night.
Jim Kyle tweeted from this event:
Great day with Sullivan County democrats. Crowd hurt by change in starting time of UT game. However all 60 in attendance very upbeat.
So, if Kyle says 60 attended…how did 159 straw poll votes get cast?!
Votes were available for $10 each. If you bought 10 tix you got 10 votes. So … basically someone bought this straw poll victory on behalf of Roy Herron, in honor of the Sullivan County Democratic Party.
Hmmm….so this straw poll was purchased?
Folks were allowed to vote early (because most wanted to get home for the game) so it doesn’t matter how many people were left in the crowd when the candidates spoke. Sounds like sour grapes on the part of Kyle and Cammack for being late. How is it Herron is the only one who knows how this works?
To answer your question, MathCheck, it’s cause Herron seems to be the only one that is playing to win this thing right now. People say that straw polls don’t matter, but it is an indication of how enthused Dem activists are about supporting a campaign. It’s not like Sullivan Co. has a ton of Dem activists anyways, so it’s pretty telling that Herron put together 85 votes at the straw poll. Sour grapes, indeed.
