Pam Murray Can Still Win By One

Posted on November 12, 2009 at 10:30 pm

UPDATE: Hollin reports on Twitter that two of the provisional ballots are marked for him. If true, this would preclude a Murray win.

For Murray to be victorious she would either need all four provisionals to be valid and marked for her or three marked for her and one ruled invalid resulting in a tie. She would then have to prevail in a council vote. Under any other scenario, Hollin wins.

Joey Garrison on the unofficial victory of Jamie Hollin in the District 5 recall council election:

There are said to be three or four provisional ballots still to be counted Friday. If the final results end in a tie then the 40-member Metro Council would decide the outcome.

“You only need one vote to win it,” Hollin said of his apparent victory. “Think about all the tactics she employed; said I was a drug addict; said I hung out with drug dealers. They put out a full-force effort, everything they had, and came up short.

“No matter what happens, this made history and will go down in the record books for the city of Nashville,” Hollin said. “Is it ever going to happen again? I’d never say never, but it’s highly unlikely.

How many council members are saying a little prayer to the election gods right now that three provisionals do not fall for Murray and they have to decide this thing?

    May the best hemorrhoids win!

WKRN News said there are four provisionals. If Hollin wins just one of the four, he wins.

Murray could still win with three. Don’t be so certain that the council would throw out one of its own.

How does that math work? The Tennessean says Hollin leads 542 to 539, with four provisional ballots to be counted (or perhaps tossed out if ineligible).

If all four provisionals are valid, and Hollin takes 1 of them, he has a 4-vote lead. If Murray takes the other three, she still falls one vote short.

To win, Murray must have all 4 provisionals be valid, and all four be votes for her. Hollin just needs either one provisional vote to be valid and for him, or for two of the provisionals to be ruled invalid. Odds are, Hollin won.

One of the provisionals could be thrown out; hence, the vote could end in a tie.

What Nick said. Provisionals are usually provisional for a reason. I would be very surprised if all four end up counted — whomever they are for.

With well over 1,000 signing the recall
petition, who would have thought this would
be so close. Most registered voters in this
district could care less about anything other
than a Sheriff or Presidential race

It’s a whole lot easier to sign a petition than to go vote, especially if you don’t have a car to early vote and you have to work a crappy job just to put food on the table.

There are a lot of struggling long time residents who wanted Pam gone but couldn’t make it to the polls.

Regardless, the neighborhood, both races will be better off with a council person who has enough of an education to be able to write and speak coherently, and who doesn’t abuse those of lesser education through fear of someone who looks different.
