The End Of Anonymous Comments?

Posted on November 10, 2009 at 1:52 pm

From Editor &Publisher:

A Cook County judge has ruled that the identity of an anonymous poster to a suburban newspaper’s Web site must be released to Buffalo Grove Village Trustee Lisa Stone.

Stone maintains that the poster, known only by the screen name “Hipcheck16,” defamed her 15-year-old son online after last April’s village elections.

I agree. Oftentimes, anonymous comments do very little to add substance to a discussion. Particularly, if they’re defamatory and libelous.

    Can a minor be defamed?

    Yeah, yeah, whatever . . .

Everyone whines when the anonymous wit busts them in the mouth and laughs when the anonymous with busts the other shmuck in the mouth.

Don’t we hear a lot of whining in the Tennessee blogosphere?

Suck it up and quit acting like a bunch of little girls.

I have no problem with exposing the identity of people who use your business or brand’s website for illegal activity, including defamation. Being clear about that upfront, as well as being clear that you will never reveal the identities of users without a court order, is just one way online communities are kept civil and thrive.

Well, I have a question. If someone accesses the web from a wifi spot, uses a proxy I.P.(which may be redundant), a disposable email addy, how could they be traced?

    “how could they be traced?”

    ACK-

Refer this question to CIA. They’ve been doing it for a few years now.

Double good. I’d regret the loss of commentary from nervous employees but this descent into increasingly vitrolic hate speech can’t continue. It’s not about backbone, “Reality,” it’s about yelling “fire” in the theater.
