Republicans Want Term Limits

Posted on November 10, 2009 at 8:26 pm

CNN:

A handful of Republican senators have proposed a Constitutional amendment to limit the amount of time a person may serve in Congress.

Currently, there are no term limits for federal lawmakers, but Sen. Jim DeMint, R-South Carolina, and several of his colleagues are advocating that service in the Senate be limited to 12 years, while lawmakers would only be allowed to serve 6 years in the House.

Great idea. Although I am not sure why a 12 year term limit wouldn’t be acceptable in the House.

I wonder if we can get the Tennessee Legislator to implement the same for the Tennessee General Assembly?

Of course they do. They think its 1994 again. Bless ‘em. Not a damn new idea from the bunch of ‘em, but God loves them anyway ;)

Don’t count Zach Wamp in on this one.

Zach was for it, before he was against it (or it became inconvenient for his ambition).

Oh, BS. Like dontcallmemikey said, they said the same thing in 1994. They only want term limits when they aren’t in power.

    Mikey,

I won’t attempt to defend the fact that after the 1994 elections most of the Republicans in Congress dropped term limits so fast you would think it had herpes.

However, in the merits, term limits are good public policy.

Over the last thirty years or so the political process in America has undergone some harmful changes, mostly due to the Supreme Evil of campaign finance reform.

First, incumbents have become almost unbeatable. Whether in primaries or general elections, once they get there, you almost cannot get them out.

Restricting the money available to campaigns has exacerbated this by reducing the resources available to challengers. Reform has also shifted the balance of power from party organizations to incumbents. Lest you think this inaccurate, please note that three of Tennessee’s five Democratic Congressmen voted with Republicans to defeat the President’s signature issue.

If those Representatives were dependent on the Party and not self-financing, do you think that would have happened?

The more that govenrnment involves itself in business and health care and other issues, the stronger incumbents will become.

The only way to redress this problem is term limits.

Term Limits? Been there; done that; got the
t-shirt. They broke their “Contract with America” then proceeded to break the bank.

Good idea but the ones to get it done are the ones needing to be limited.

I just find it interesting that the party that promotes free speech and thought, and patriotism and the strict construction of the constitution, who think McCain-Feingold is a bad idea because it restricts free speech as determined by money - also thinks freedom of people to run for office, and the freedom of people to vote for whomever they choose who are eligible to hold that office, is so awful an idea it needs legislation to prohibit those freedoms.

In other words, hypocrisy - thy name is the GOP. It’s nothing more than another ploy to hit at Democrats like Cooper, Tanner, etc. And its a very tired idea that seems to run completely counter to the ‘teabag’ concept of liberty, freedom and the constitution …

The only infallible, unstoppable, guaranteed way to get a truly new Congress is :
NEVER REELECT ANY INCUMBENT! AND DO IT EVERY ELECTION!

Don’t let anyone serve more than one term. Some of the reasons to do this:

    • It gives us a one-term-limited Congress without using amendments
    • It encourages ordinary citizens to run for Congress
    • It would be supported by 70% of the country who want term limits for Congress
    • It is completely nonpartisan
    • If repeated, it ends career politicians in Congress
    • It opens the way to a “citizen Congress”
    * It would open a torrent of fresh ideas to improve our government
    • It ends the seniority system that keeps freshmen powerless
    • It doesn’t cost money. But you MUST vote! Just don’t vote for an incumbent
    • It is the only guaranteed, infallible, unstoppable way to “Throw the Bums Out”
    • It takes effect immediately on Election Day
    • If it doesn’t work, do it again and again! It will work eventually

NEVER REELECT ANYONE IN CONGRESS. AND DO IT EVERY ELECTION!
