Roadbuilding Ain’t His Everything

Posted on November 9, 2009 at 8:59 am

Rep. Stacey Campfield doesn’t like Republicans who say roadbuilding is the best economic stimulus there is:

In the short term that may be true, but in the long term I think a strong economy with many thriving, small and mid sized, free market, private businesses is the best job stimulator there is. Without that, the economy will not turn around, long term, no matter what we do.

He’s obviously never been to Sneedville. Anyone who has been there realizes how important roads are.

Maybe Rep. Stacey Campfield should learn what economic stimulus is before he tries to talk about it.

Economic “stimulus” is, by definition, something you want to work over the short term. It’s something you turn to when you’ve been pushed into a deep recession and can’t hope to speed yourself out of it through monetary policy. You use stimulus to try to get through the deep bust that you’ve run into, so that the market can get back to creating long-term growth on its own even sooner.

Even hard-core Keynesians wouldn’t recommend using fiscal stimulus to create jobs in the “long-term.” By addressing stimulus like anyone alleges it to be a long-term option, Rep. Campfield only reveals his own ignorance of the concept.

Drive out to West Tennessee sometime and you will find the best roads in counties with declining industrial bases and populations.

For years the Legislature was dominated by the West Tennessee Democrati Caucus and good roads were built all over the region. Yet these counties, by and large, have been losing people for decades, a good indicator that roads are not a short-term stimulus.

    Klien…

Then why did none of the stimulus money go to small and mid-sized buisinesses?

Because those that supported the Stimulus package are servants to the Labor Unions, and Big Business.

The Conservitivwe has always been more of a friend to Small Businesses than large corporations.

During the Reagan Revolution more small businesses were created than at anyother time in US History.

Stimulus can come in many forms, such as tax breaks for new business, cuts in new business licence fees or cuts on capitol gains. They don’t always have to be a government program.
