Local Electeds Strongly Encouraged Cooper To Vote Yes On Health Reform

Posted on November 7, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Ilissa Gold notes that a significant number of both legislative and Metro Council leaders signed a letter asking Rep. Cooper to vote yes on health care reform, a vote he indicated this morning he would, in fact be making:

All of the Democrats from Nashville in the House (even Mike Turner, wow!) and quite a few Council members–notably, just about all of the African-American members. Cooper does not normally get this kind of explicit statement from the Nashville electeds, so this is quite unprecedented. They’re sending a message for sure.

Just to emphasize, I don’t think there was any one thing that pushed Cooper over the edge. But this is a different wrinkle.

Glad to see Coop got the message from his district! The voters in the 5th Congressional and their representatives in state and municipal government were pretty clear where they stood on the President’s agenda. I wish some of the other Reps would take a hint.

Meto Nashville is well noted for its pagan officials. Only a complete idiot would support the current bill. People have lost their mind and are wandering fools.

I think the Congressman reached deep into his sworn duty pocket and decided he had been a follower of the Blackburns and Corkers long enough:The People 1- Big Insurance and HCA-0.

Of course, this same give me group from the Council
signed onto the letter. Rep. Cooper did the right
thing by voting yes and moving the bill onto the
Senate. It’s what comes out of there now that’s the
most important thing. If it’s not changed greatly
Many will be disappointed if our good Congressman
    votes “Yes” a second time!

Thank you Rep. Cooper for doing the right for the people of TN. I can testify to the fact that my Blue Cross needs competition.

The Dems held a vote on a Sat. and didn’t allow the Reps to go home and talk to their constituents. They also excluded themselves from the requirements of the bill, which penalizes Joe Citizen if he doesn’t acquire a gov “approved” provider (i.e. the gov). Right out of Moscow-style politics.

Yeah that sounds like democracy to me, NOT!

You libs and the hypocrites in DC just destroyed our freedom and our individual rights.

Storms coming in 2010, hope you libs enjoy the short ride!

    No more.

I gave him the benifit if the doubt on Crap and Trade.

this vote sealed it for me.

Don.. People 0, Healthcare 0, Health Insurance 0

    Government 1.

You see, the Government heathcare systems REFUSE to fund treatments for Patients 4 times greater than Health insurance.

    http://biggovernment.com/2009/10/05/ama-endorses-largest-denier-of-health-care-claims/

Of the eight insurers listed, Medicare is most likely to reject a claim, sending away 6.85% of requests. This is more than any private insurer and double that of the private insurers’ average!

So now when 6% of you guys are refuesed treatment… By Government’s Public Option. Dont crybaby you now have to man up and die.

Democrats Want to kill people.. slowly and painfully.

Haven’t always been a Cooper fan but have voted for him, holding my nose especially after he torpedoed health care reform in ‘93. He’s a smart, pragmatic politician, not an ideologue, and knew something had to change because health care costs are bankrupting our country, especially the working middle class. He listened. He knows that we have now will not be the final document but at least the discussion will continue.

  15. frankj writes

Cooper is in that seat for as long as he wants to be in that seat; and there is nothing mindless progressives or Republicans can do about it. You can’t “redistrict” Davidson County unless you cut the county in 1/2 and that won’t happen. Otherwise Davidson County will be a Congressional seat it of itself with pockets of adjoining counties drawn in for numerical purposes.
There are some similarities with Cooper and the recently opened CA-10 seat. The Soros groups at DailyKos and MoveOn.Org got their panties in a wad about Tauscher, the district was gerrymandered in 2000 to be more Democrat and Tauscher went on to win every race with at least 65% of the vote. No “progressive” dared challenge her and no Republican wasted his/her money. Even in a “best case” scenario for progressives, and this is stretching things considerably, Cooper would get 50% of the vote against a mindless progressive. Add in the fact that at least 10% of the Democratic voters think that an election is a quiz “Who is you Congressperson?” vs. a contested election and Cooper would wipe the floor with a mindless progressive or any Republican who dared run against him. Hence, Cooper will do what Cooper wants to do.

The republicans keep sayong wait until 2010, you may be surprised of the outcome. The democratic party is not dead, just sleeping, but we are waking up. Bush/Cheney would make the dead wake up, and you can believe that we have not forgotten what they did to TN and the country. All of the tax cuts that they gave to the wealthy, and the money that the wars have cost our country. This action has put more burden on its people. The money has to come from somewhere.

  17. Ken Jantz writes

Well, Blue, glad to see you recognize that the money has to come from somewhere. So where do you think the money for this healthcare boondoggle is going to come from? You think Insurance carriers that must take all comers won’t raise everybody’s premiums? You think the taxes & fees on medical equipment won’t be passed along to the consumer? Even the tax on the “rich” will get passed on in some way–they are the business owners. The Government hasn’t been able to administer Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid without tremendous overhead and incompetence.
Any sitting Democrat will not get my vote–I remember the fallout of the banks bailout, and then two American automanufactures, one of whom had been bailed out by the Government before, counted on an infusion from Mercedes to bail them out, and then came back to the table for more Government money. Where do you think that money came from?

thoughtbubbls—can you back up your claim with data? Show a survey? Or is it wishful thinking on your part? I think TN and US residents were very vocal in their opposition to the bill.

    Hey Don,

Big Insurance and HCA is made of ‘The People’. Regulation is sufficient to keep them in line.

The REAL score is Big Government 1, the People 0.

As a conservative, I like my local Democrat Councilmen, but I apparently do not agree with them on Federal issues. I hope they keep it local so I can keep voting for them.

Did Bush pay for the wars? Did the wealthy get richer? The money is there, we just have to stop the fraud. Are you reading what the wars have done to our soldiers? No one has more to answer for than Bush/Cheney. Rep. Cooper is just trying to help people in need. Period

    Blue ROFLMBO..

    1. Bush was president.

    2. Presidents cannot pay for anything (Those are 100% acts of Congress) and your CONGRESS since 2006 has DOUBLED war spending over the GOP Congress. (Article 1 section 8 Clause 1 and 2 of the US Constitution)

    3. Presidents do not send troops to war. That is an act of Congress (Article 1 Section 8 Clause 11). The Afgan and Iraq Wars were Bi-Partisan in their beginning, War against Afganistan and Iraq were passed by a DEMOCRAT SENATE and a REPUBLICAN HOUSE, that gave the Letter of Reprisal against Iraq in Oct 2002.

I have to ask this IS THERE A SINGLE LIBERAL THAT UNDERSTANDS THE SEPARATION OF POWERS in the US Constitution.

The President only Commands the Troops once the war is begun by Congress.

Congress says where and when and against whom to fight a war

so the grand success of the Iraq War belongs to the Democrats? I wonder why they aren’t running on that issue, since it was such a wise decision?

Bush told us that we would have a mushroom cloud. He told one lie after another. He took us into the wars. He and Cheney put the cost of the wars off budget. He lied to Congress and he lied us into the wars. It amazes me how the GOP can try to outsmart even themselves. But the truth is the truth. I hope you heard Rep. Cooper on Hardball today. A very smart man that knows what is going on.

The governor of TN said that the cost to TN taxpayers will be a billion. AND that means income tax. Be sure to thank cooper when you all get your TN payroll taxed more. I say NO to Government control health care and gov’ment insurance. How can the gov-ment regulate and participate at the same time? Not effectively. Long lines, slow death to some. That’s the gov-ment way.

They were talking about removing Sadaam way before Bush became president. Just about every well-known politician made statements about Sadaam’s dangerous activities and he needed to be stopped. Congress looked at the same reports and data that Bush had and supposedly this “stupid” man “put one over” on Congress…all 535 of them. Brilliant, huh??

When the 20-somethings realize they will be forced to pay 17-22% of their pre-tax income for insurance, then sticker shock sets in and huge regrets follow.

Cloud Really the Healthcare reform is going to keep HCA in line.

If that is true then why has HCA supported the Healthcare reform bill.
