Huckabee Looks Strong In 2012 Poll

Posted on November 5, 2009 at 12:38 pm

From Gallup:

Looking ahead to the 2012 presidential election, 71% of Republicans say they would seriously consider voting for Mike Huckabee. This gives Huckabee a slight edge over Mitt Romney (65%) and Sarah Palin (65%) in this early test of the strength of several potential Republican contenders. A majority of Republicans also say they would seriously consider voting for Newt Gingrich, but far fewer say they are currently ready to support the lesser-known Tim Pawlenty or Haley Barbour.

As a progressive Democrat, I have worried (and still worry) about Mike Huckabee as a candidate. He is very personable, he has a great personal story, and he is good at peddling economic populism and compassionate conservatism - both of which by the way, are the ONLY message Republicans have a prayer with against Obama.

Still, Huckabee has said some crazy stuff since he ran for office that will make good fodder for campaign commercials. While Huckabee might be damaged goods now, a note to the Dems: you would be wise not to underestimate Mike Huckabee as a presidential candiate. He is Sarah Palin without the stupid and with a conscience. If the economy does not recover and people aren’t back to work by mid-2011, Obama could face a serious challenge from Huckabee.
