Phil Bredesen Speaks At Fundraiser On Behalf Of Sen. Doug Henry
Posted on November 4, 2009 at 12:42 pmFrom Dru Fuller:
Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen introduced the senator because he, “felt so strongly this man needs to come back, needs to be in the state Senate, needs to do the work he has been doing.” The governor broke with a longtime policy of not supporting a candidate in a primary. The governor co-hosted the fundraiser for Henry along with Democratic stalwarts Andrew and Marianne Byrd.
“I very much would like to see (Sen. Henry) re-elected,” the governor told the crowd. “I respect him enormously. He has provided an unbelievable service not only to this district but also to the state of Tennessee and to the nation through that.”
The two term governor and onetime Nashville mayor, said officeholders, “need some people who’ll show you the way. I’ve said right at the front of that list of people that helped along, helped me know how to start getting things done was Sen. Henry. I respect him enormously.”
UPDATE: Further transcript submitted by someone in attendance:
Gov. Bredesen: “Since I have been governor for seven years, I have never, ever involved myself in any race where there was a primary. This is the only one I have ever done because I feel so strongly this man needs to come back, needs to be in the state Senate, needs to do the work he has been doing. I first really got to know Senator Henry when I was mayor. Obviously, when you are Mayor there’s a lot of stuff that goes on between the state. He was always reliable counsel about doing things. He was was always somebody who was willing to step out and help the city. He was always someone who you really could go and talk to. I really appreciated it immensely. That only grew when I became Governor. You come into these jobs, I’ll be honest with you, you don’t know your way around. After eight years as Mayor, you get up to the state, it’s a whole new world at the state legislature. It is a whole new world, believe me, in terms of getting to do things, you need some people who’ll show you the way. I’ve said right at the front of that list of people that helped along, helped me know how to start getting things done was Senator Henry. I respect him enormously. He has provided an unbelievable service not only to this district. I know lot of people here care about it but also to the state of Tennessee and to the nation through that. I very much would like to see him re-elected. We need to raise the money that it takes to do that in both the primary and in the general election and continue the really terrific service that he has given to our state. Senator Henry, thank you so much for asking me to come here and be with you.”

Phil and Doug are both on their way out. Go get ‘em, Yarbro!
Yes, Yarbro, “go get ‘em.” Alienate the Democratic Party establishment (including the major fundraisers). That will show those ornery oldsters.
My master Ron Ramsey is chuckling mightily at this intra-party primary strife.
Looks to me like Yarbro’s the one raising the money, not Doug Henry.
What that means is that once Yarbro puts Henry out to pasture, the “Democratic Party establishment” will come to him asking for his help on fundraising. That’s how they roll. They’ll let bygones be bygones if there’s greenbacks on the table.
Your master Ron knows this as well as anyone - I guess you haven’t been paying attention in class, Jon.
Ask Randy Camp, Jim Hawkins, Becky Ruppe, or Ty Cobb how much a Phil Bredesen endorsement is worth.
Hold the line, Axel … I’ll make those calls as soon as I get off the phone with Jim Bryson and Don McLeary.
Ah, for the romance of 2006, when a Lowe Finney win still meant that the Senate went Republican for the first time in 8 generations.
Good times. Good times.
When will Jeff Yarbro tell us what he stands for?
So far, we know that he’s young and inexperienced and that he thinks jobs and schools are really cool.
I dunno, I’m still pissed over the Kurita thing, but I gotta say this quote from Yarbro in Monday’s Tennessean hit the nail on the head:
“If you waited for the political establishment to tell you it’s your turn, you’re not going to make that much of a difference when you get there,” Yarbro said.
Yarbro will kick Henry old tired ass. Jeff is a great superstar of the Tennessee political world. People like Jeff are the future of this country.
Who is going to give us God, Country, and Apple Pie?
That will be my guy/gal! oh yea, and a little less
tax and spend!
