Legislative Per Diems Get Upped

Posted on November 3, 2009 at 11:46 am

The word from Tom Humphrey’s Humphrey on the Hill blog, a project of the Knoxville News Sentinel which a part of the Scripps family of media properties:

The daily “per diem” expense payments for state legislators have been increased by $14 to $185 under an automatic annual adjustment built into state law.

The increase became effective on Oct. 1, according to Connie Ridley, director of the Legislative Office of Administration. Under state law, the rate is based on a federal government calculation of the cost of motel and meals for visiting Nashville.

There, there. Giving credit where credit is due isn’t THAT painful now, is it?

But state employees haven’t had a raise in 4 years, do they think the cost of living doesn’t go up for us too? We are sucking out here and need a raise. I don’t care if you cut something else, be fair to the state employees, they are the ones that keeps the state going. It’s funny, the Governor leaves the country and the legislature gets a raise. Huh? Something’s wrong with this picture!!!!!!

Of course they tied such increase to some
    type misterious federal calculation.
They knew that would be a higher rate
than if the city or state took a true
    measurement of increase or decrease.
In fact most local experts would tell
you because of the slowed economy the
cost fell last yr for both rooms and
meals in our particular city. Please
don’t share this info with Tourism
    Commission!

State employees have to beg and grovel to even get a 1 or 2% increase, yet the legislature gets one automatically.
    That’s messed up.

It’s been two years since employees had a raise, the promised fix to compression was promised for 2008 and the promise is still unfulfilled.

Bredesen says budget projections show no employee raises possible until 2013. Plus rumors of more layoffs, as if most employees don’t have too much to do already.

But hey! the Commissioners got raises of up to 100% and they can party in the new bunker!
