Devaney Open To Pro-Choice Republicans

Posted on October 28, 2009 at 6:52 pm

From Dru Fuller:

“I am not going to say that if you are pro-choice you are not welcomed in the Republican Party,” Devaney told Preston. “However, I think to get elected in Tennessee you need to be pro-life, quite frankly, and those are the kind of candidates that we are going to be looking for.”

Recalling the grand old man of the GOP, Devaney said, “Ronald Reagan said if we agree on 80 percent of the issues then, we should work together and come together as a party, That’s what I’m going to be looking for; looking for some common ground.”

More to the point, “Are we going to exclude people who are pro-choice?” he said. “No. If they agree on the others about limited government, about promoting free enterprise, I want them in the Party quite frankly.”

Suffice it to say here, I understand and respect Mr. Devaney’s reasoning here as well as his adoption of Mr. Reagan’s position. The question is, how much do you allow before you are no different than your opposition? I think this is the real problem today-most Republicans are no different than their opponents-better known as RINO’s

Below is a post of my comments regarding Mr. Devaney’s statement as found at MarkAlbertini.com

“What is it that binds the Republican party together?
Are there any issues which are non-negotiable to be a Republican? For me, the single greatest issue of our time is abortion. I can think of no issue which strikes at the heart of who we are as a people and a nation as whether or not it is OK to murder a child conceived in rape. Yet this is what TN’s Republican leader espouses if this is what will bring more people into the party. I’m am very sorry to hear this. I might add that before I entered the TN governors race in 2006, I sought the advice of leaders in the TN Republican party. I was dissuaded from mentioning my pro-life stance as a priority issue. I disagreed then and I do now.”

Lamebrainey knows how to kill a huge section of support as it gets up and rolling.

Mr. Devaney, sorry to interrupt, but there’s a very short woman here in the outer office who would like a word with you.

So if that is you want to run candidates that are pro choice don’t be surprised and/or upset when single issue advocacy groups do not endorse. Is there any core belief that is sacred?

“upset when single issue advocacy groups do not endorse. Is there any core belief that is sacred?”

An endoresment from…say, Right to Life?

Didn’t RTL already blow that bridge up, and betray the party first…and come out on the losing side?

So, what exactly is their threat going to be?

“If you are not fervently RTL, we won’t endorse you, and you will win the election.”

    Scary.
