A notable number of Tennesseans believe some of the most extreme rumors about President Barack Obama.
Thirty- four percent of Tennesseans say it is either probably or definitely true that Obama was born in another country (if this were correct, Obama would be ineligible to serve as President). Fifteen percent say they don’t know whether Obama was born in another country or not, and 50 percent say Obama was either probably or definitely not born in another country.
The proportion who believe Obama was born elsewhere is even higher among the state’s Republicans, 47 percent of whom say Obama was either probably or definitely not born in this country, while 15 percent say that they don’t know, and only 37 percent of Republicans say Obama was probably or definitely not born in another county.
Thirty percent of Tennesseans say it is either probably or definitely true that Obama is a Muslim, with 14 percent saying they don’t know and 55 percent saying it is probably or definitely not true. Again, the proportion who think this rumor was true is higher among Republicans than among Tennesseans in general, with 48 percent of Republicans saying it is definitely or probably true, along with 14 percent who say they didn’t know, and 38 percent who say it is probably or definitely not true.
Thirty-five percent of Tennesseans think it is either definitely or probably true that Obama will try to take people’s guns away, with 13 percent saying they don’t know. Fifty-one percent say that this rumor is probably or definitely not true. Fifty-five percent of Republicans think it is definitely or probably true, with 13 percent saying they didn’t know, and only 33 percent saying that this is probably or definitely not true.
Among Tennesseans who say that they or someone who lived in their household owns a handgun, 44 percent say it is either definitely or probably true, with 8 percent saying that they don’t know, and 47 percent saying that this is either probably or definitely not true.
Forty-six percent of Tennesseans say it is probably or definitely true that Obama is a socialist, with 11 percent saying they don’t know. Only 42 percent of Tennesseans think this is probably or definitely not true. Seventy-one percent of the state’s Republicans think Obama is probably or definitely a socialist, with 10 percent saying they don’t know, and 18 percent saying he is probably or definitely not a socialist.
For all these rumors, there is evidence that those with more education and/or more general knowledge about federal politics are relatively more likely to believe that the rumor is not true.

I like the way Kleinheider sways this arguement by calling these things rumors. So anyone who uses their reasoning ability to conclude these items may be possible, especially after the actions that are being taken by the government, are somehow on the fringe of reasonable thought. Saying Obama is a “socialist” or being worried he’ll “take your guns away” is subjective…though those people are wrong, its understandable.
Saying he was born in another country or that he is a Muslim is a matter of objective truth, and so those people who believe it are misinformed, or willfully ignorant.
This is frightening. Some morons really do believe everything they hear. Facts only get in the way, obviously. This goes far to explain many of the goofballs that keep getting elected to offices in this state.

There is no reasoned, balanced way to argue with the assertion that he is an “extreme marxist left-wing radical” without either insulting you, or asking you to define some of your terms, which you will then claim is insulting.
Sean, your attempt to make some of their arguments sound reasonable is admirable, but Obama’s “socialism” and the idea that he wants to take guns away are not subjective; both are objectively false, unless one is willing to pervert the definition of “socialism” to mean “any action taken by the state other than military spending” and “taking guns away” means, well, I don’t know. I’m really not sure how this rumor got started, but acting like it has any validity whatsoever is not contributing to rational discourse, even if you mean well.

Third, Obama hasn’t been hiding his past - on the contrary, he started from the beginning of his political career talking about the fact that he was the son of a Kenyan and a Kansan. Obama was born in Hawaii and those who don’t believe it are just blind to the facts. Some people just don’t like facts to get in the way of a good conspiracy. Here are some facts, directly contradicting things some people posted above.
1) There’s no evidence that Obama has spent *anything* on this, much less the “million dollars” people like to claim. Here’s where that figure comes from: Someone noticed in the regular disclosure forms that his campaign paid about a million dollars to a law firm. They don’t know what that million dollars was for, of course, so they’ll just cite it as the cost of responding to the birthers. You don’t suppose that perhaps, just maybe, there could have been other legal expenses associated with running for and winning the presidency, do you?
2) Obama has provided a certified copy of his birth certificate that says specifically that he was born in Hawaii, and state officials (Republicans I might add) got in front of TV cameras and vouched for that, saying that this was indeed from the state of Hawaii and the records do indeed say he was born there.
3) Despite how much the loony-tunes like to say it, there is no such thing as a “long form” birth certificate. Hawaii doesn’t issue anything like this and it doesn’t exist. The certificate the Obama provided is exactly the official certificate (and the only form) that Hawaii provides.
4) Obama hasn’t “sealed” any records or done anything to withhold anything. Just another conspiracy theory.

The fact of the matter is that Obama has not produced his birth certificate (long/legal form) and he has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money fighting lawsuits that are trying to force him to produce it. Does that mean he was not born in the US? No, but he also has not proven that he was born here and refuses to prove otherwise so there is no proof either way. The fact that he refuses to show his birth certificate does not bode well for those who say he was born here though.

I have two daughters that were born in Hawai`i. I do have two different copies of their birth certificates, the original, which has information such as hospital and the doctor who delivered them. That copy was issued shortly after their birth.
Out of curiosity, I ordered copies of both their birth certificates. What I received was similar to Obama’s.
When I inquired about that, I was informed that they changed the format some years ago.
For all who seem to have your head in the sand, there has been 30 some cases filed in courts as to Obama not releasing records that can prove or disprove his citizenship. Currently they have an active case in federal court in california that has been slated to go forward. As to the on line birth certificate, back in 1961 they issued them to people that were also born elsewhere, so you really need the long form to know for sure. Also in 1961 there were only 6 official races that were listed on birth certificates in the United States, and Africian was not one of them…..besides Africa is a country, not a race. Or for some of you that have not gotten it yet when asdked for your race, do you say AMERICAN??

I have an earned doctorate. I also have serious questions about Obama’s eligibility to be President. So also does Camille Paglia, a liberal Democrat and certainly no ignorant “birther.” The reason I have such questions has more to do with Obama’s spending nearly $1.4 dollars to keep his records from the eyes of the citizens of our republic. Why? What does Obama have to hide? He may, indeed, have been born in Hawaii, but what other information is contained in his other records that, if revealed to the public, would be a threat to his grip on power? Further, Obama is proving himself to be an enemy of our Constitution and republican form of government by his actions in office. It is true, indeed, that both Republicans and Democrats have been violating our Constitution for decades. But the violation has kicked into light speed since January 20. This president and Congress, along with the anti-American and unconstitutional cabal of czars spilling out of the White House should disturb any thinking American who holds government according to the principles of the Founding Fathers and the limits of the Constitution sacred.

They have been thrown out based on numerous other things such as, how they were filed, when they were filed, where they were filed, who filed them, etc… but not one, I repeat NOT ONE has been thrown out based on lack of evidence. As a matter of FACT, U.S. District Judge David Carter is the first Judge to actually agree to hear the case on Jan. 26, 2010 and determine if the findings are worthy to actually go to argument. I do not know if Obama has stated a position on guns, but the fact school children from many different parts of the country can be seen in Youtube videos singing the praises of Obama is very unsettling to me. All thoughtful people should be disturbed by these images. You can see children singing songs written originally in praise of God with the name of God removed and the name of Obama inserted. If it only happened once, it would be slightly unnerving but because I see a pattern of behavior it is especially distressing because it looks to be orchestrated from the top. Never before in the history of our country have school children been taught to sing the praises of a sitting president. Fostering a cult of personality is common among dictators like Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il. There is no reason to brainwash children unless the leader intends to stay leader for life. Obama causes further worry by his request of school teachers and administrators to post his likeness and his quotes on school walls and hallways. This is unacceptable. Obama needs to immediately disavow these requests and discourage children worshiping him or he will never be able to restore faith in his leadership.

The “short” version has the official name of “Certification of Live Birth.” The “long” version has the official name of “Certificate of Live Birth.” Until June 2009, both were available in Hawaii. In fact, the short Certification of Live Birth was not accepted by the Hawaiian Department of Homelands because it is computer-generated and therefore easy to forge and requires extra verification. Due to the kerfuffle around Obama’s birth certificate, Hawaii changed its policy in June of this year so they only issue the short form now. The longer form is still on file. Hawaii issued a statement saying the originals have not been destroyed. If US District Judge Carter rules in favor of discovery, it will be released. The big question now is what will you say or do if a federal judge rules Obama is not a natural born citizen? It is a hypothetical question, but it is an important thought experiment. Would you still support Obama as president? Or would you insist the Constitution be followed and that he step down?

I know this is correct because I have been following the story for many months. I remember seeing the Department of Hawaiian Homelands website back in October 2008 when the website was expressly telling people to get the long-form Certificate of Live Birth because the Certification was computer-generated and required further verification. Of course, that website has been changed now that the policy is changed.
The long form certificate is still on file. It has not been destroyed. And if Judge Carter rules in Keyes favor, discovery will go forward and it will be made available to document experts to see if it was forged or not. I cannot say if it will be found to be a forgery or not. There is no way to know. But Obama has spent a great deal of money trying to stonewall this issue. Our form of government does not do well when rumors, distrust and intrigue are allowed to run rampant. It is important for public policy for the long form certificate to be released and examined by document experts. I mean, that’s fair, right? If Obama was born in Hawaii, then he has nothing to fear, right? Good. I’m glad you agree.
Look at Obama’s Hawaiian COLB on your computer. Open it using a MS photo program.
Next, zoom in to it 400-800 percent. Now, look at the name, date of birth and other individual information.
Notice the abscence of green background in or between the letters and numbers?
That’s indicative of cut and paste. If it were a real document, you would see green background in those spaces.
It can’t be taken down completely from the Internet, so whoever forged it has posted the evidence for us.

Please notice they are advising readers to apply for “certified certificates” not certifications. The certificates were available and Obama could have easily released one prior to June 2009. But it is really unimportant because the original certificate is still on file and the Judge Carter can order it released during discovery. You say you would agree that Obama should step down if the judge determines he is not Constitutionally eligible to be president. Thank you for taking a reasonable position. If the judge orders the birth certificate released, will you criticize the judge for seeking the truth? Will you call him a racist? Or say he should resign from the bench? I hope not. Important parts: The “Certification of Live Birth” is the only thing Hawaii issues, and is the only thing Hawaii has issued since 2001 or earlier. This wasn’t changed in response to the Obama nuttiness, as someone implied earlier.

The clear statements are that in 2001 they went to a pure electronic system, issuing “Certification of Live Birth” documents which they consider to BE “Birth Certificates”. They also say that for genealogical purposes they prefer the form with more information on it, IF THE PERSON FILING THE CLAIM HAS IT.
There’s definitely some ambiguity about what was or was not possible in time period from 2001 to 2009. In one sense it would be interesting to see this resolved, but it really is just a point of curiosity, not legality. The 100% clear thing is that regardless of whether there was a way to get a copy of the original hospital record, the default when you request a legal birth certificate (since at least 2001) has been this Certification of Live Birth, which has the full and complete legal standing of any type of Birth Certificate. It must be accepted by any court and in any court proceeding. Period.
Here’s a summary: Obama requested a birth certificate in 2007, and was issued the legal document that the State of Hawaii issues. It has been vouched for by Hawaii as legitimate and valid and has been issued by the state, and as such has the full legal value of any type of birth certificate - there is nothing more than this that is necessary in a legal sense. Conclusion: he was born in Honolulu. Case closed, end of story.
He does not have any obligation to follow up on wacky requests - no other president in history has been asked to do these kinds of things or provide these kinds of unnecessary and superfluous documents. Could he get the “long form”? I have no idea, and it’s just not relevant given the legality of the form he did supply. I suspect that part of his lack of willingness to respond to this is practical - you can’t give time and credence to any nut that comes along and makes unreasonable requests - and part is political. Frankly, you birthers look like absolute loons to most of the country, and as a political move it is running people away from the Republican party because they don’t want to be associated with such crackpots. A recent Gallup poll showed that only 27% identify themselves as “Republican”, a steady slide since all this nuttiness has been going on. Compare this to 35% who identify as Democrats. Or futher compare to the 2005 numbers when there were more Republicans: 35% to 33%. The GOP has a long way to go before it’s a viable party again, but a good dose of sanity would be necessary first.
The Hawaiian COLB is a forgery. You can see the evidence of cut and paste on his name, DOB, etc. Just zoom in to those items on the digital file of the document using your own computer. The document has a green patterned background, but the forged info is missing the information between the letters and in spaces of some letters. Since the document was released onto the internet last year, this evidence cannot be corrected now because it is already out there.
If Obama continues on this path unchecked, America will not survive. If Obama gets his way, a new, dark chapter will begin and I believe that most of us will miss our country and the period before Obama’s reign began.

Something I can’t say for the alphabet news outlets and the factwreck.org parts of the world some of you people dredge up.
If, in fact, Obama is an American citizen, why has he not proven it with his live birth certificate and school records and travel records? People need to do their own research and not just believe something because someone said it was true. People who believe that Obama probably isn’t an American citizen have good reason. If you or I was asked to show our papers to prove who we are, we would have to do it or get fined or get thrown in jail or who knows, maybe even shot? I’m just saying he could settle this simply by showing the papers instead of spending millions fighting it. REMEMBER, NO ONE is above the law; red, black, white, yellow, brown or green.

The allegations of the study are apparently all too true. Just look at the debate on this very page. Verifiable facts (& even State issued documents)are completely ignored by the very people who accuse others of blind faith. How ironic! But this is the tried & true method of ‘attack where you’re weak’ (aka Rovian politics), i.e. attack Obama as a socialist/communist when George Bush was the one that started supporting the PRIVATE banking system with public dollars. I can think of nothing leftier. I know that people will point to the GM bailout, which I didn’t agree with either, but at least GM actually makes tangible things made by middle class Americans as opposed to the (criminal) banking firms. but I digress. Ignorance, willful & perhaps otherwise, is rampant on the right. What is sad is that these people used to be shamed out of serious discussions by their party leaders. This is no longer the case since the leaders of the right made a decision to start making stuff up out of whole cloth, after being shown how to do it well, by Carl Rove. The right used to support the military & veterans & now they swift boat vets & accuse those who want damn good reasons to send our troops to their possible deaths of being unpatriotic. I signed up to this website yesterday hoping for some enlightening debate but after reading this page I see the moderate voices from the other side are being drowned out by the nutjobs. Serves them right though, after all they did sow these seeds. It’s time for Harvest!
BTW. There is no difference between a Birth Certificate, a Certificate of Live Birth or a Certification of Live Birth. I can only assume the mind that crafted such a subtle distinction is not ignorant but willfully misleading others. Heck of a job, though. Many seem to be buying into it.
If you where a friend going to visit someone for two week in another country what would you expect them to do for you? Or supply for you?
