The Devaney Statement On 62

Posted on October 13, 2009 at 9:17 pm

A statement from TNGOP Chairman Chris Devaney:

“There was no question from the beginning that Pat Marsh was the right man for this job,” said Devaney. “Once voters learned about his conservative values and his experience, I knew they would want him representing District 62 in the legislature. Pat’s campaign ran an impressive ground game - making more than 15,000 direct voter contacts. He was also very accessible to the voters, which made a difference in this race. I’m looking forward to seeing Pat sworn into the 106th General Assembly so he can start fighting for lower taxes, less spending and pro-growth policies that will help fuel job creation across the state.”

District 62 is historically a Democrat district. Marsh prevailed over Democrat Ty Cobb whose brother Curt Cobb resigned the seat to take another government job. During this election, Democrats consistently touted their candidate’s conservatism in an effort to appeal to voters across the district.

“Democrats tipped their hand in this election and demonstrated that their strategy to get their candidates elected is to have them run as Republicans,” continued Devaney. “It seems that Democrats know they have to run as Republicans because the American people are rejecting policies being pushed by liberal Democrats at the local, state and federal levels.”

UPDATE: From former TNGOP chairman Robin Smith:

“Tonight the voters of the 62nd District affirmed what we heard across Tennessee in November of 2008. Tennesseans are looking for positive results-based conservative leadership to deal with the problems facing our state and nation. Once again, the voters saw through the empty negative tactics of the Tennessee Democrat Party and resoundingly stated they want Tennessee to take a new direction.

I congratulate Pat Marsh, the House Republican Caucus Leadership and my friends at the Tennessee Republican Party for a well run campaign. I look forward to continuing to work with them to provide the consistent conservative leadership Tennesseans validated again this evening.”

Devaney sez: “their strategy to get their candidates elected is to have them run as Republicans”

Devaney is right and I wonder when the TN Dem powerbrokers are going to realize that that strategy is getting them nothing but losses. It’s the same strategy Harold Ford Jr. tried and the one that the state candidates used in 2008 which cost them the House.

A Democrat can’t beat a Republican by running as one. If that was the case, then Cobb should have wrapped up the election when he got the TN Right to Life endorsement. I wonder how many progressive and liberal Democrats in that district (and yes they are out there) sat at home on Election Day because Ty got the TNRTL endorsement or bragged about his NRA membership?

You have to wonder how many more elections the TN Dems are going to have to lose before they figure out that you can’t win by trying to out-wingnut a wingnut?

When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for [being a Democrat], and says he really doesn’t believe in [their platform], he is sure to lose. The people don’t want a phony Democrat. If it’s a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat.

If I had my way, every Democratic candidate would receive a copy of that quote upon filing to run for office.

This will probably push Fraley,Borchert and Tidwell closer to retirement next year.

“Democrats tipped their hand”? I mean, come on - I agree with the substance of that statement, but what about promoting anti-civil-rights, anti-choice, pro-gun, anti-good-economic-policy candidates hasn’t been SCREAMING “Republican” on the part of Dems for the last decade or so?

Really, now. What does he take us for?

I’m just curious, does this signal the waning influence of TN Right To Life, since they endorsed Ty Cobb? Apparently even Republican voters don’t care who the anti-choice lobby picks.

    Are we paying attention, Democrats?

    I think I received 13,000 of them myself…

I have never gotten so many phone calls and mailings for any one election in my entire life–combined.
