Zach Wamp Like The Common Man

Posted on October 2, 2009 at 1:54 pm

He doesn’t have any savings either. From the Tennessee Journal:

U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Chattanooga), who turns 52 this month, has served in Congress for 15 years.

Prior to that, he was a commercial real estate broker. It didn’t make him wealthy. Financial disclosures have consistently shown Wamp’s net worth among the lowest in Congress. His 2007 filing lists assets, excluding his home, in the range of $1,001 to $15,000, with no debt.

Last year, when the 2007 filing became public, Wamp told The Chattanooga Times Free Press that all his equity, which he said exceeded $500,000, was in his home. He said he owns no stocks or bonds because of the potential for conflicts of interest.

A bit surprising he didn’t save anything with the Family paying for his Washington digs.

Fifteen years in Washington? He may have had some expensive room-service bills.

This may shock people but Zach Wamp IS a common man yet he is an uncommon politician.

He’s down to earth, patriotic and matter of fact. These are attributes we see in many of the people who cross our paths. But his level of moral courage and character is something remarkable and in all too short supply on Capitol Hill.

Simply, Wamp is a STATESMAN not a politician. He does the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. Not the easy thing, not the popular thing but the right thing.

Statesman versus politician, which do you prefer?

Just reposting to correct an error in my website link. In case anyone is interested, I have posted an entry about the NEW Zach Wamp “20/20 Vision” video.

This video is MustSEE TV, regardless of whether you’re a Republican or Democrat. I guarantee it will inspire you and make you think a second time about the challenges facing all states in the age of a seemingly omnipotent Federal Government and a global economy that places America’s lone superpower status in future jeopardy.

Wamp’s 20/20 video is “must see”, but definitely not “inspiring”. A healthier Tennessee, that reads better, with an economy based on manufacturing and agriculture. Who would be against that? And that’s exactly the point. Wamp hasn’t a clue how he would accomplish that, nor how he would fund it. He didn’t graduate from college though he attended for four years or so, spent some time addicted to cocaine, broke his promise on term limits, and has never run any on-going enterprise (he was a salesman before joining congress) and managed today to imply that armed felons on the streets make Tennessee a safer place (what else would you conclude from his support that it’s okay for persons who can’t pass a background check to buy guns?). I would anticipate a Wamp governorship would run just about as well as the Bush presidency - a hands off executive allowing political syncophants to run amok, voodoo budgeting followed by financial crisis, and constant alarm over divisive social issues to distract the far right base from the breaktaking incompetence of his political appointees and recurrent mis-management.

Zack’s actually a pretty nice guy, but he’s not governor material. And maybe I’m too old fashioned, but at 52, I’d think a guy would have figured out that he needed to live below his means in order to accumulate some semblance of wealth and freedom from him and his family living hand to mouth.

Let me tell everyone where Miles blew it…..

When he brought up Wamp’s perceived lack of wealth and used it as a way to formulate an attack on his earning abilities, discipline or managerial skills. This is truly disingenuous and just imagine if Wamp was found to be a millionaire… A political hack like Miles would attack him for being too rich, too greedy and obviously corrupt! :-)

Thus, the previous entry is easily discredited as an obvious hit-piece yet it deserves some attention. We don’t know Wamp’s true net worth (and it’s really none of our business) but we do know that he could have easily become much richer in Washington if only he wanted.

Call me old-fashioned but I still believe that voters want patriotic public servants in positions of high office. It is obvious from this article that Wamp never went to Washington to become rich or powerful and this fact may be one of his greatest virtues for serving as the future Gov. of Tennessee.

About Zach’s “20/20 vision” video, Miles obviously missed the most telling line: “We’ve got to protect freedom in our state.” With this line, Zach’s vision becomes a “manifesto for all things Tennessean”. Freedom is the operative word of the day and Zach explains why as he reminds us of an omnipotent Federal Government all too eager to usurp powers historically reserved to the states under the 10th Amendment.

Sorry to go so long here folks but this coming 2010 election for governor is the most important election of our lifetimes. Governor Rick Perry of Texas has already taken numerous stands against the Federal Government in defense of his citizens. Likewise, we need someone with the moral courage necessary to stand up, no matter what the consequences and do what is right for Tennesseans!
