Is That Jason Powell in Blackface?

Posted on October 1, 2009 at 11:31 am

Rep. Mary Pruitt’s Democratic challenger needs some cash:

UPDATE: SouthComm CEO Chris Ferrell comments on this post at Pith in the Wind:

Kleinheider messed up. His post was completely inappropriate as were his initial responses.

Most blog posts are not edited. We trust our writers to post content that is appropriate. Most of the time they do that, but in this case Kleinheider did not. If this had been a news story for the Post or the Citypaper or the Scene it would have been edited and that headline never would have been made public. When the Post editor, Geert De Lombaerde (to answer the question asked above), learned of the post and responses he instructed Kleinheider to stop pouring fuel on the fire with his responses. By that time many people had already responded appropriately to the post and the decision was made to let Kleinheider see how people responded to his offensive post. Much of the early discussion on Pith was actually an interesting discussion about racial attitudes. Maybe it was a mistake in judgment to leave the headline up, but we rarely change content once it is posted unless there is a factual mistake.

We asked Kleinheider to write a thoughtful apology rather than an off the cuff response. At some point Friday it will be posted on Post Politics. It was his post and I thought the response should come from him. However, in light of some of the comments here tonight I had to write my own response as well.

One of my first thoughts when I read some of these comments was that those without sin should cast the first stone.

Most of us have benefited from or participated in institutional racism in our lives. I mean really Henry, how diverse were your classes at Yale and Harvard in the 70’s? Did you really compete against the best and brightest African American students for your slot? And Matt, how many full time black journalists worked for you when you were managing editor of the Scene?

With the caveat that all of us white southerners have some degree of guilt for benefitting from structural discrimination, the notion that SouthComm is run by a bunch of racists is simply ludicrous. First of all, I have operating responsibility for the company. The investors are not involved in editorial decisions in any direct manner. So the charges leveled at them are just not related to the reality of how this organization functions.

I think the fact that Bruce called Kleinheider out on this blog is an example of our commitment to independent voices. We do give bloggers with very diverse opinions a platform to engage our readers. Sometimes our owners and managers agree with them, but much of the time we don’t. After all, since they don’t agree with each other how could they be speaking on behalf of the worldview of our shareholders or management?

If you want to call me a racist for allowing this headline to remain, then I would suggest that you are making a broad judgment based on a narrow slice of information. While much of this discussion was taking place here tonight I was at Pearl Cohn watching my son play football for his very integrated public middle school. I’m pretty comfortable that any complete look at my career on the council will reflect that among white council members, no one had a better record of advocating for programs to improve the lives of African American (and other minority) members of this community. Even my loss to Howard indicated that I wasn’t willing to use race to mobilize voters opposed to a black Vice Mayor in order to win a race. I think my public and private life demonstrates serious commitments to racial justice over a long time frame.

Maybe we should have changed the headline when it came to our attention. I didn’t actually see the post until it had been up for almost four hours. By that time, it seemed to me that the readers had pretty quickly corrected Kleinheider and that a serious discussion about race was beginning to happen. I think discussion is a good thing. Kleinheider went about creating it in an inappropriate way, but race is obviously still an important topic for us to discuss in this community. SouthComm will continue write about race in this city because it is too important an issue to be swept under the rug. I regret that this incident will likely bias how some of you view our future more serious reporting on the topic. I assure you that as we approach the subject in the future we will do it in a more respectful manner.

The headline is pretty racist, no doubt. I mean, I guess Kleinheider isn’t aware of the history behind the word “blackface,” as it’s usually used to describe theatrical makeup worn by Southern whites to portray black stereotypes in the early 20th century.

I do not know Jason Powell or Steven Turner, and I don’t need to know them to know that the title of your blog is completely inappropriate. I cannot believe that you are associated with the Nashville Post. Do you consider yourself a serious journalist? Do you seriously not know that Nashville is part of “the South”? I am not familiar with Mr. Kleinheider, although his invocation of “black face” and reference to Mr. Powell appear rather ill-informed and oddly placed, especially given the history of the term and Mr. Powell’s record of fighting for social equality and progressive justice. I’ve worked with Jason on many campaigns and issues; and, therefore, am utterly confused by this association. Observing from Washington, DC, where we are intimately aware of the break down of civility in public discourse and racial politics, perhaps I should not be surprised by this distasteful and ignorant display. I speculate that a healthy dosage of education, humility and maturity may resolve any existing deficits regarding Mr. Kleinheider and his future postings. Until then, immediate corrective action would be to withdraw this inflammatory and ill-conceived blog post. I’ve visited Nashville with great pleasure and know it deserves better.

I am responding to Keep the Title! as he misconstrues my effort. I have no problem with the 1st Amendment and Mr. Kleinheider’s right to demonstrate his inability to articulate reasoned titles and produce ill-informed work. Further, my geographic location (whether in DC or Buckhannon, WV, where I grew up) has no bearing as to the reasonable conclusion that this blog-post is ill-conceived and inflammatory, reflecting a lack of civil decorum traceable to current political discourse. But since I grew up in rural Appalachia, I would note that my simple suggestion for corrective action is hardly an observation of backwardness, as you put it, but rather of thoughtfulness. My grandmother advised me that honesty and decency are not mere concepts, but the hard currency one which society thrives. Thank you for your reflection on my earliest posting. I don’t think Kleinheider should be forced to remove the blog title. Although he’s making a racist statement, I think it’s more accurately classified as “offensive” speech instead of “hate” speech, it’s unlikely to incite any real harm to any individual, and it’s furthermore directed at a political candidate, and thus protected by the 1st Amendment. Is it a stupid thing to post? Of course. Could he have written a much better title if he’d been a little less lazy? Yep. Is Kleinheider an irresponsible hack who shouldn’t have the weight of a supposedly legitimate newspaper behind him? I think so. Should Kleinheider consider being more racially sensitive in the future? Naturally. Will he do it just because it’s the right thing? I seriously doubt it. Serious question(s) for all those in the know about Nashville politics:

    (1) I see Turner is black obviously and presume/know Powell to be white, so . . . do they look alike? You know, was this an attempt at a “Hey that guy looks like a black version of J.P. or that J.P. is white version of this guy!”

    (2) Do they sound alike in actual voice or their message/request for support? - “Hey that S.T. and J.P. sounds like the same dude! And one is white and the other black.”

    (3) Did J.P. have a video just like this?

I mean, I guess I don’t see what the underlying connection. I see that whatever the connection is, the rhetorical laziness of going from J.P (white dude) = [similar in someway] = S.T. (black dude) to “Hey, is that black dude really J.P. in blackface?” is just . . . leaving aside everything else . . . just intellectually and commically LAME.

You know he’s not a racist? How do you know that? Lately it seems to me he’s not only racist, but sexist as well. At the very least, he’s a total jackass. Is he on crack? Drinking too much? Dropped on his head as a child? WHAT??

Let’s revisit the poor judgment of Kleinheider over the last few months: First he harasses a woman after voyeuristically invading her Facebook page. Then, he makes a very successful black business woman in this community look like an idiot and incurs her no end of racial harassment and worry for her family (which he claims is not his responsibility). Throughout this period, he routinely retweets racist comments via Twitter. And now he posts this b.s. W.T.F.??

OF course, he does all of this after preaching about having “a code” that doesn’t allow him to report on a serious breach of ethics and racial trouble in local government . . .a racist breach so offensive and so huge that diversity training was required for everyone. But “she was essentially just a secretary” so he didn’t report it. Again . . . sexist . . . and again . . . very poor judgment. (And duh . . .secretaries are THE most powerful people in most organizations!!)

Even without all this controversial crap, he’s a shitty political blogger to start with . . . even a sixth grader can retweet other people’s stuff . . . that’s not blogging. That’s just lazy.

Kleinheider isn’t at all up on gender, race and/or politics . . . he’s decades behind the state of the art, and it’s wearisome and tedious to even have to say it. He doesn’t write his own stuff - thank God =- but he isn’t even smart enough to repost and retweet anything that IS intelligent on these subjects. It’s an insult to the businesses who advertise with Nashville Post - and it’s long been a behind the scenes joke on Twitter. But it just isn’t funny anymore….

All this race-baiting trouble-making crap for the last few months . . .in this political climate . . . this is total idiocy. It’s clearly a transparent attempt to get everyone who has completely abandoned and ignored this ridiculous “blog” for months to read it. Well, yes, we have now . . . and it’s still (and even more) SERIOUSLY lame.

Kleinheider is an embarrassment to this publication and to this city. Ignorant and irresponsible . . . and lazy. Nashville deserves SOOOOO much better than this.

Kudos to Nashville Scene for not recognizing this as a political blog. Obviously they have far more sense than the Nashville Post (which used to be a smart, interesting site once upon a time).

I am dropping Nashville Post from my Twitter feed, and I will NEVER AGAIN advertise with or recommend this company, unless they fire Kleinheider and find someone who will not abuse and insult women and people of color. What used to be a joke is now seriously ugly.

C’mon Nashville POst . . .let’s get a real political blogger in here with some useful political insight that your readers and advertisers don’t have to cringe at and apologize for.

    What a jackass.

You and people like you think that because the US elected a Black President that you can rear your ugly heads without consquence? Anyone who subscribes to this hate is no better than the KKK that your hate was spawned from. SEIU, ACORN, Liberal Black southern political activists, you are all idiots and being used by rich white people that still run the show.

This is clearly a representation that you DO NOT have what it takes to be in the public eye. You are rude and unlettered and deserve to be tarred and feather, then burned. You are the scum under the poop after the rain. Martin Luther King did not die for racist black trach like you but for the hope of WHITE people and BLACK people that would stand against you RACIST PIG!

Hey, any of you folks ever been to the Belle Meade Country Club? How about the Swan Ball at Cheekwood?

Well, the people that own half of the news publications in this town - that would be the owners of Southcomm - spend a lot of time and money at such places. These are the kinds of places where all of the “help” is black and all of the paying members and guests are white. The black staff typically dress in crisp white uniforms, and everything is, well, not unlike it was in this state in the 1950s.

Get a clue Nashville. The newspapers that fought against “English Only” are gone. The newspapers that called out Bob Clement in 2007 are gone. The newspapers that championed the cause for black Nashville during school rezoning are gone.

Those papers were The City Paper and The Scene. Very different in approach and in their partisan politics, but at least they took stands and basically agreed on the things in this city that really mattered. Not everything, but on many things. There was also a healthy rivalry there for breaking the news.

That is gone. What you have left is this tripe. Kleinheider is a brilliant political blogger, but he has no filter and apparently no editor.

This blog post is your first look at SouthComm’s true colors. Those are the colors of Belle Meade Blvd. First the City Paper’s editorial page disappears - just after waging a war against English Only. Then the Scene becomes an “arts & entertainment” brand according to Southcomm architect Chris Ferrell after a period that included taking Gus Puryear apart at the joints among other things.

Face it folks: Belle Meade just bought your papers. Expect lots of society pics and more poor decisions like Kleinheider’s post. Where is the management at this new “unbundling” of the daily newspaper? Out for drinks at the turn on #9 at BMCC.

Good heavens…. People, get a grip.

I was thinking about this controversy while I was cooking dinner, in terms of editorial decisions. Blogging is so different from traditional news media that some elements of journalistic training simply do not, cannot, transfer. This particular blog, however, is tied to an online newspaper; so, some traditional concerns, e.g., marketing, business, and profit bottom lines, are parallel.

I’ve heard all is fair in love and satire. Satire always has a good chance of being protected speech, and many bloggers take care to note on their blogs the disclaiming “satirical environment” in which they operate. This blogger has certainly cultivated such an environment here. We know Adam is going to go for a joke and a pun if he can. That is his history. His sense of humor is easily, readily tripped. He has shocked or annoyed some or many, but if we’ve stuck around, we’re all pretty used to it at this point. As a smark aleck myself, I tend to cut other smart alecks a lot of slack (hello, Six Meat Buffet), but I’ve sliced ‘em up on occasion, too (hello, SMB).

When I saw the post that has spawned these comments, I wasn’t horrified or incensed, but I’m not black. The headline didn’t strike me as mean or vicious. But I’m not black. I’ve seen mean, vicious jokes and satire. This just didn’t strike me that way. I read the headline and thought, well, this is some comparison with, some reference to, a white candidate in some campaign I know nothing about.

This is just a tough call. We know if a black blogger had posted the headline, we probably would not be having this discussion/tirade. If I, an immigration restrictionist and critic of certain efforts by certain ethnic groups — http://lastcar.blogspot.com/2009/10/when-you-dont-elect-judges.html#links — had posted the headline on some blog of mine, we know I’d never hear the end of it from my immigration opponents.

The young do not have the history and the automatic, programmed editing of most of us older folks. That’s good to some degree. But that history remains, and I think we should take care not to hurt others if we can avoid it.

If I had to use an editor’s pen here, on a blog like this, I’m unsure what I’d do.

    Nash,

You’ve hurt my feelings. How could you? It’s clear that you do not understand the oppression my people have endured for generations.

Can we sit down and have a beer to talk this over? If you buy, I’ll forgive you. I’ll bring the cheese.

I think everyone here has valid points. ACK, has promoted not only a rousing discussion, and in doing so, not sure if he realizes it, since some of you think him not too keen, he promoted a young candidate who needs to raise funds for his campaign. Out of curiosity can any of you remember the date, time and where abouts of the fund raising event? Did any of you, by chance, attend? Did any of you feel compelled to donate to this young candidates campaign? Pure curiosity.

After reading all responses, I recognize this is definitely a sensitive issue and respect everyone’s point of view. With that being said, Gotta Wonder, thank you for the full hearty laugh! When I got to your “Beer and cheese? I’m in!” comment my daughters could hear me laugh from the other side of the house.

Well, Kleinheider isn’t the first of us that said something he’d probably would like to have reworded.
But this really isn’t “racist” at all.

    Then some idiot replies with:
“Another example of southern white Americans (not all) who just don’t have a F***ng clue.”
Sorry, that WAS a “racist” comment and the cheap disclaimer (”not all”) does nothing to smooth it out.
LOL… If Kleinheider had said “not all” it would have been intentional racism.

I don’t explode on everyone who says something bigoted about Christians or Southerners or Whites or what have you (which happens far more often by the way), but the hypocrisy I see here and elsewhere concerning racially sensitive speech is simply amazing.

Sure, those kind of references strike a nerve in some. But what Kleinheider was saying is even clear to me and I know none of these people.

Get a hide, people. This is the internet.
If you can’t take it go watch TV.

    Wow.

Stay classy, Klienweenie. Its a good thing you’re so effete and high pockets, because if you ever uttered any language like that around me I’d turn your teeth into chicklets.
I suggest that your editors look for another blogger because it’s apparent that you couldn’t be trusted with fingernail clippings, much less writing an article.
