Gaylord Funding Anti-Convention Center Group

Posted on October 1, 2009 at 2:30 pm

From Michael Cass:

Gaylord Entertainment Co. gave $8,500 to a new group that has been raising questions about Metro’s plans for a new downtown convention center, a Gaylord lobbyist said today.

Tom Ingram confirmed the donation to Nashville’s Priorities, which announced its existence earlier this week. But Ingram said the group approached Gaylord, which owns Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Donelson, before the company started talking regularly with Mayor Karl Dean’s office about its own concerns.

“This group formed independently of Gaylord,” he said. “Gaylord is not active in it at the moment, especially while we’re engaged in what we view as a productive dialogue with the city.”

So Gaylord opposes the creation of 3,000 construction jobs. That’s 3,000 paychecks for Nashville families.

So Gaylord opposes the creation of tens of thousands of jobs for Nashvillians after the Music City Center opens. Tens of thousands of paychecks for Nashville families.

Nice going, Gaylord. Way to be a good corporate citizen.

This wouldn’t have happen when Bud Wendell was CEO. He loved Nashville, and Nashville loved him.

Things are different under Crocodille Dundee.

Not active “at the moment”? What the fuck does that mean? I’d expect more out of the mighty Tom Ingram that some non-denial denial. This dancing around the edges bullshit isn’t even remotely credible. I’d have a lot more respect for Gaylord if they would just stand up and admit that they’re opposed to the Convention Center. Instead, they’re coming across like a big corporate sissy. Correct that … A big GREEDY corporate sissy.

Let’s not forget that Kevin Sharp, head of Nashville Priorities, is the son-in-law of Lew Conner, Gaylord’s chief lawyer at WallerLansden. Conner is also best friends with none other than Tom Ingram. Ingram stays at the Conner house two weeks every month, and he named his son, Conner, after his friend.

For Nashville’s Priorities, it’s all connected.

No offense guys, but this is S.O.P.. Stuff like this has been going on for more years then I can account for. (and I’m a old guy) Yes, Bud was an exceptional individual, but he is gone, as are most of the true gentlemen. The story wouldn’t be any different in Dallas/Fort Worth either. To use a truly beat up phrase; it is what it is.
