Yarbro Should Quit Downtown Law Gig If He Wins Senate Seat

Posted on September 30, 2009 at 4:07 pm

That’s what Jeff Woods thinks anyway:

We asked Yarbro if he will quit the firm if he wins the election. “To be honest, I’m not sure,” he said. “I don’t have any intention to step down, but I haven’t made any sort of final decision on that.”

To be fair, Yarbro is a litigator. He doesn’t lobby for Bass Berry. Still, does anyone really expect this guy to keep an open mind when his lobbying colleague Dick Lodge walks into his office to ask for his vote for legislation benefiting, say, Gaylord? Clearly, Yarbro should promise right now that if he wins, he’ll leave Bass Berry.

That’s the decision Rep. Mike Stewart made last year when he was running to succeed Rob Briley. When Stewart won the election, he promptly quit Waller Lansden, another lobbying/law firm, to avoid any ethical conflicts. He didn’t want to look like Waller’s Manchurian candidate.

He should step down, if he wins. It would really bad if he didn’t

The Nashville Scene’s pitbull Jeff Woods smells him some fresh meat, and is ready to chomp down and never let go unless Jeff Yarbro promises to quit his job at Bass, Berry & Simms because he’s one of 215 lawyers at the firm, one of whom is a lobbyist with the state.

Might as well make that pledge now Jeff. Hell, you should probably just quit your job now because every story from here on out will ignore the issues at hand and focus on what some other member at the law firm you work at did or said at one time or another. Have a co-worker who joined a politically incorrect country club? Well, that’s pretty much the same as you having joined said country club.

Sean, we know you’re the Perez Hilton of the Nashville blogosphere, but don’t go sissy.

Yarbro doesn’t need to quit now, but he should pledge to quit if he wins. Woods has a point. BBS does a great deal of lobbying before the General Assembly. Mike Stewart showed Yarbro the playbook. Take the pledge and this is a non-issue.

    Spineless Coward,

I think I pretty much just said he should pledge to quit so that it won’t be an issue that consumes the Scene for the next 11 months.

But when it comes to the Scene, they attacked Stewart because one of the partners at Waller served on the board of a country club that is notoriously light on pigmented membership. Now, it might be interesting, but what Bob Boston did in his private time had nothing to do with what Mike Stewart would do as a State Rep. Its a ridiculous guilt-by-association line of thought that is worthy of the Glenn Beck show.

Brausted or whatever your name is,

Shut your neophyte mouth, and get a job big boy

To run against chairman Henry is to be a fool and the fool will pay

    Pretty lame.

How about this: Jeff Woods works for a company that employed a reporter who is now the director of a partisan thinktank, therefore Woods is a party hack and should resign from the Scene.

Calling this an “ethical cloud” is ridiculous, and the comparison to Mike Stewart, whose area of practice was government regulations and taxes, is really weak.

Ahh, great retort, I feel like we’re back in the “chipinista” days.

You called yourself the Perez Hilton of the Nashville blogosphere, Sean. Don’t get your feelings hurt because it stuck.

How in the world is quitting his job going to keep him from having a conversation with a lobbyist?

To argue that he’ll take a position to support one of Dick Lodge’s clients so that Lodge can make more money is just plain lame-brained.

If you want to ban lobbyists from the Capitol, then do it. But my bet is some our conservative bloggers will be surprised at how many companies and organizations they have ties to have lobbyists at the Capitol.

If that happens, the politicians really WILL be able to cut their deals in the back rooms.

I got a better idea. He should pledge to quit the race against Senator Henry. I don’t agree with “Duck” very often on the issues but he is a staple of what staying power means in government:

Do the right thing, for the right reasons.

In the words of my favorite senator: I am democrat born and democrat bred and when I die I will be democrat dead.

Yarbro needs to understand he is going to be sucking up funds that dems are going to need to win back the legislature in 2010. If he stays in this race the RED blood is all on him. And I for one won’t ever forget it.

Any suggestion that a successful, hard-working, well-qualified candidate — like Jeff Yarbro — should somehow be held responsible if another Democratic candidate loses is laughably ridiculous.

Using the same ludicrous “logic,” excellent students who are smart and work hard during school should be required to drop out so that less capable students have a better chance to finish in the top half of their class.

Applying the same stagnant “thinking,” any sports team player who scores during a game should immediately be benched so that his or her team members have a better chance to score points.

Yeah, that’s the ticket for success. Thank you, TeamPlayer, for sharing your powerful reasoning.

Unfortunately, Yarbro is turning an election cycle that should be focused on upending Republicans into one that, yet again, is all about Democrats fighting amongst themselves. I’m not going to throw the “red blood” card, but I will ask another question point blank: How fucking selfish and self-centered are you, Jeff? Even if you win the primary, and somehow manage to hold on through the general, Democrats have gained nothing other than a younger legislator. Are you smarter than Sen. Henry? No. Are you more dedicated than Sen. Henry? No. Are you more honorable than Sen. Henry? No. Are you wiser than Sen. Henry? No. Do you have Sen. Henry’s knowledge of government, budgets and history? Hell, no. This entire venture of yours, if successful, translates to a net loss for the voters of Davidson County. Do everyone a favor: Quit this Quixotic quest before you do permanent damage to yourself and others.
