Emily Evans Looks Like She’s Got Doug Henry’s Back In Battle With Yarbro

Posted on September 29, 2009 at 1:09 pm

From the keyboard of the Council Lady from the 23rd District:

Senator Henry and I had a number of conversations about how the lax borrowing practices of local government were affecting Nashville as well as other city and counties across the state. What I learned from those conversations is this:

1. Senator Henry is old and I doubt he will dispute that.
2. Senator Henry has a keen grasp of government finance and debt practices.
3. Senator Henry has forgotten what most people will ever know about Tennessee’s budget and finance.

Naturally, I am biased in favor my constituents - of which Senator Henry is one. But before we starting talking about how old he is let’s also find some time to talk about what he knows and how he serves the people of Tennessee.

To be honest, I kind of wish Evans had considered running for the seat. They call her a “progressive” but she governs as a technocrat. She’s responsive and extremely knowledgeable. I’d vote for her in a state race.

As it stands, demographically, the 21st will have to choose between Wilford Brimley and a Jonas Brother.

    :)

Sen. Henry certainly isn’t some doddering old fool like Robert Byrd, but all the same, he’s served his district reasonably well for the nearly 4 decades he’s been there, but his constituency has been changing, and its time for those who were born well after he was first elected to that seat to have a real choice about where they want their district to go from here on out.

While Sen. Henry is a wealth of institutional knowledge, there is no reason others like Jeff Yarbro can’t take up that mantle.

The timing makes me wonder who else is looking to get into this race? Why announce now unless you are trying to keep another candidate out?

Sen. Henry has already campaigned successfully for this seat nine times. Last election, I think he had nearly 70% of the vote. He is well-funded and, make no mistake, he will spend it all. Besides, he speaks seven foreign languages and he served 25 years as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

The Council Lady’s post left me hanging!! What is that Senator Henry has forgotten that most people will ever know?

I’m sure the quote originally said “Sen. Henry has forgottn MORE THAN what most people will ever know about TN’s budget & finance. I expect there was some disconnect between publishing what the Council Lady said and what was is reported here.

Cute statement council-lady but don’t expect my support or that of other young pavement pounders when you try to climb the next rung on the political ladder. Maybe you should do some research on the good senator’s voting record before you support him. How has he addressed issues you profess to stand for? Glad you went on the record though.

Senator Henry is an honest politician. Why
doesn’t the guy run against Odom?
Senator Henry can not be replaced. He is
    a treasure.

Senator Henry is a Tennessee treasure. He is a gentleman. He is smart. He is kind. He is a man of his word. I am generally of Republican persuasion, but I will always vote for him. I only wish all the other state legislators were like him.

Have any of you read Senator Henry’s editorial in the Tennessean defending the practice of Per Diems in the State Legislature? As a constituent of Senator Henry’s, it is disturbing that he defends a policy that legislators clearly abuse (both republicans and democrats) as a fair form of compensation for part-time legislators. The last time I remember anyone using per diems in the private sector was the late 90s. Senator Henry may have 40 years of a favor bank built up, but he doesn’t have my vote. As a member of one of the most unproductive legislative sessions, it’s time for him to gracefully step aside; that is, if he truly wants to remain a Tennessee treasure.

In all fairness, Steve, Senator Henry doesn’t take his per diem and he returns his salary to the state. Always has.

Senator Henry is a brilliant Man, with immense integrity. We are fortunate to have him.I see no reason for him to step aside. Senator Henry should and most likely will prevail.

I agree with Queener, why doesn’t he run against Odom. He has a much better chance at winning that race. Considering Dem and Rep both can not stand Odom.

  14. September 30th, 2009 6:34 am

Senator Henry is a rarity in our current political system. He says what he thinks and he votes what he believes, despite pressure to vote for popularity. Can that be said about many others?

I looked at Mr. Yarbro’s website and read about his education and employment. He is clearly a smart young man.

Isn’t it nice to have two good candidates for a position instead of holding your nose to vote for the least bad among the bunch?

Ousting Gary Odom would be preferable … no doubt about it.

Though I myself would Never wish to run for ’school board’ anywhere (as I am much more of the ’state representative’ type; not too large a seat yet good for a Man), I would wish to offer information about ‘problems in Education’ and at my rural former ‘home’ district (a place where I ‘Never’ had planned to teach but they then forsook to “teach me a lesson” about ‘Teaching’, the problem pertains to the ‘district boundaries’ and the ‘Money $pending’ and the personalities whom ruin lives with the ‘counting crows’ and the ‘elitism perpetuation’ so disgusting of small towns. In Lawrenceburg they are creeps who Ruin lives, from the fat Old principal of 30 yrs to the foreign young school board puppet at my former schools. This IS important and I ask Ms Mayes and Mayor Dean to please consider. Peace.

Re: “My personal philosophy is that you can’t fix it unless you know what people think is broken,” Mayes said.

So the definition of a good public servant is that they are independently wealthy?

It will be very hard for the district to EVER REPLACE the seat of Senator Henry. He is a true Southern Gentelman that has served his district with intelligence ,class and care. I know of many stories of times he left his family to help other families even on Christmas morning. There will never be another manor woman that will truly fill his shoes. The district should be proud to say I LIVE IN DOUG HENRY’s District. I will always treasure the fact that I know him and respect him.

We, constituents in the First Council District, will not forget the efforts of Mr. Henry and those he is ‘connected’ with to attempt to move legislation through the Senate and House behind our backs. The attempt was heavily defeated with the help of Representative Moore. Mr. Henry is adept at ‘using’ the system with the knowledge gained while in service, which can easily be used to describe Ms. Evans.
