Put A Name In

Sean Braisted thinks a real progressive challenge to Cooper could have a legit shot taking out the Congressman — but they have to step up first:

By having a national PAC come in and try to recruit a candidate (something the DCCC or DSCC often does) and offer a base of support, financing, and possible staff, that will tempt potentially viable challengers into considering what might have once been only an after thought. Right now, its impossible to reliably poll a potential primary race because there isn’t a name to counter Cooper’s…its all theoretical and a matter of conjecture. But a real race, involving a real campaign about issues and a close examination of Rep. Cooper’s record, could lead to surprising results.

Once again we have a bunch of Tennessee democrats acting like Jim Cooper is invincible and all those “DC insiders” should just give it up and go home. Hmmm….I seem to recall hearing this same argument before way back in 1993 and 1994. By the way what happened to ol invincible Coop in 1994?

I think there are a lot of ppl. who have ideas more in line with the national Democratic Party and are plenty tired of having nowhere to go with them. Time after time we’re told to hold our noses and vote for the D as our state Party crosses line after line: It’s out grandstanding against gay marriage; our Governor makes fun in the press of people volunteering for the Party’s Presidential candidate; it’s doing nothing to recruit or promote candidates who are young, people of color, etc.; it throws out the highest ranking Democratic woman in the state while expecting to face no pushback from anybody, and now it’s losing offices left and right while the powers that be are showing no real willingness to make fundamental changes in Party structure.

Cooper better be careful or he’s going to become a poster boy for this stuff in a district that can actually do something about it. Frankly, why are we being told we *have* to sit here and hold our noses when we ARE a district that doesn’t have to vote so conservatively?

Aren’t there enough anti-choice gun nuts in the rest of the state to balance things out?

Whatever it takes, get Cooper out of there.

Eleanor A, you still sound bitter about 2002. I’m guessing you were a Gayle Ray supporter that was trampled by the Women for Cooper. I’ll even go one step further to bet that you were an ardent supporter of Kurita who publicly resigned from your party and stated that you would vote for McCain. Hillary wouldn’t have done any better so get rid of the chip on your shoulder and move on.
