Chip Forrester On The Effort To Primary Jim Cooper

Posted on September 28, 2009 at 5:10 pm

From Mark Brown:

“Congressman Jim Cooper is one of the most studious and deliberative members of Congress we have in Tennessee – on either side of the aisle. It is illogical for someone or some organization to try and remove a statesman like Congressman Cooper. Democrats need to focus their attention, energy and resources on helping retake the state legislature because Republicans intend to redraw legislative districts after the 2010 Census.

“Efforts to primary Congressman Cooper are misplaced. The debate over health-care reform has stirred strong emotions. It’s important we get this legislation right, and Congressman Cooper gets that. If we don’t keep our eyes on the ball, we’ll wind up with more people like Marsha Blackburn representing Tennessee in Congress. All Democrats, I hope, understand that nightmare scenario.”

You know what would be cool? To see Cooper face a well-funded liberal challenger, and watch Chip and the TNDP get involved in the primary to save Cooper - thus infuriating many liberals in Davidson County. Or not get involved, and infuriate many moderate Dems in Davidson County.

    Heh.

But in this “dream” of most every non-pragmatist, who is this well funded challenger? Name somebody. The only Democrat I can think of who has little to lose and could possibly have enough money and capital to be taken seriously is the guy who had the job before Cooper.

Hey, hey, hey, Chip… when did the Party get involved in primaries? We are all Dems remember. Some folks are better Dems than others, but that is what the primary is for, to get better Democrats in place.

It isn’t your place to take sides in a primary battle, Chairman.

Bob Clement was more conservative than Cooper. Why would a liberal group support him?

Is anyone paying attention to the fact that a contested primary is Bill Hobbs’ dream?

All you Obamaites who put Chip in the Chairman’s job need to listen to your leader. I know you are new to politics and it shows.

Chip Forrester should resign after a statement like this. As the Democratic Party’s state chair, he should not be interfering in a party primary. He’s obviously taking sides with Cooper over anyone else. That’s not fair to use the TDP’s resources to advocate for one primary candidate over another. Shame on you, Chip!!!
