Mashed Potatoes, Mac ‘N’ Cheese And McWherter
By Kleinheider Posted on September 18, 2009 at 1:19 pmThe Mike McWherter for Governor campaign has just launched a campaign staff blog, Traveling Tennessee. One of the first entries is by Political Advisor Jed Brewer:
We ate lunch at a local meat and three by the name of (coincidentally) Larry’s. The owner, Larry, was very gracious in allowing Mike to do a little campaigning before and after he ate…and by a little campaigning, I mean Mike shook the hand of every customer in the restaurant. While at lunch, I was telling Mike and Larry that while most people that work on campaigns eventually get very tired of eating at these meat and three type restuarants (we do eat at lots of them), I love it. Really, I do. It is far and away my favorite part of being on the campaign trail. I bet I have tried mac & cheese and mashed potatoes in almost every county in Tennessee…and rarely have I been disappointed. Yesterday was no exception, Larry’s makes an excellent country ham, mashed potatoes and mac & cheese plate! Not to be outdone by me, Mike had a nice helping of Catfish and turnip greens that he seemed to really enjoy! I can’t say this enough, I love getting to sample food from the great local restaurants all over Tennessee.

But have y’all eaten hamdogs yet?!
Good Lord man! Grow up. This isn’t 1976. This faux man of the people “meat and three” crap is why this campaign is such a joke.
What next? Pappy O’Daniel?
Mule Day?
Commenting on barbed wire fences?
The Soggy Bottom Boys are singin’ “Man of constant sorrows” right into that can.
It could be worse, it could be a McWherter Video Blog. We all know how good a speaker he is….
Good try by the McWherter team to shade Mikey as a man of the people and to make it appear that he’s got the support of bloggers and the grassroots, but not so fast. Blog activity by campaign staffers doesn’t necessarily mean that Mikey’s got ANY grassroots activity going within his campaign. Try as they may, it will be VERY hard to make people believe that Mikey’s campaign is anything more than keeping daddy on the phone and keeping Mikey away from a TV camera.
So far the only campaign that seems to have any real grassroots activity is Roy Herron. The Jackson Day volunteer turnout was impressive for Herron.
No GRITS? What the hell?
Mikey actually shook a voters hand??,
From those i’ve talked to across the state, McMillan has a good base of support in all age groups, especially the youth.
Word at Jackson Day was that all of Herron’s “supporters” were bused in from Kentucky.
Catfish and turnip greens???? What did he wash it down with, chocolate milk? Earth to Jed & Ned Ray’s little boy ….the common man eats hushpuppies and cole slaw with his catfish. You’ll make yourself very sick eating turnip greens with catfish at some of these mom and pop joints.
I thought i heard some of them saying they were his son’s classmates at Yale.
Well, as aggressive as Roy’s folks were, it wouldn’t have surprised me. Trying to get through the lot of them, I felt like Robert Stack going through the airport in AIRPLANE…..
For argument’s sake,
Heyron: I think you know that’s a pretty silly rumor.
Steve Steffens: Aggressive is what I want in a Democratic candidate for governor. There’s no other way to win. The causal observer (which I’m one) couldn’t have walked away from Jackson Day without thinking that the number of Herron volunteers was impressive.
Please Do: As much as everyone likes McMillan, I’m afraid it’s a bit of a stretch to say she has grassroots support. If she had it, wouldn’t she have a lot more money in the bank and have a lot more folks volunteering for her at big Dem events? If volunteers at events in Nashville are a barometer for who has grassroots support (and that’s not an unreasonable thing to think; it is, after all, the 2nd largest pool of Dem voters in the state), she should’ve had no problem organizing folks for Jackson Day. Not many, if any, to speak of. Same for Kyle and Cammack. McWherter had some, but nowhere near the number Herron had.
At the end of the day, it will be interesting to see who ends up winning tomorrow at the straw poll in Rutherford County. My bet is that whoever wins that wins the prize for best organized grassroots campaign so far.
The Herron trolls are lashing out at every other Democratic campaign.
The tone of desperation is noteworthy in their comments.
They really want to be seen as THE grassroots campaign.
it’s almost a sure sign of impending doom when a campaign resorts to talking about being a grassroots campaign.
Wait, you’re not a troll, Heyron? Sounds like it.
It’s safe to say I’m not a Herron troll. Just don’t think Mikey is the guy because he’s not aggressive and have observed some things about other campaigns. Herron’s campaign has by no means been perfect, but he has done a good job organizing folks at the past few big events.
I would love to see other campaigns ramp up more. It would be good for the party and the general election. Hopefully, all other campaigns will come to tomorrow’s straw poll prepared to win. I’m crossing my fingers.
Heyron, I’ve got my watch out; let’s see how long it takes McWherter’s troll to respond to a non-troll’s posting now.
It’s interesting that the Herron trolls are ignoring the comment about Roy’s son going to Yale. It is pretty common knowledge that Roy has instructed his staff and his son to not tell people in Tennessee where he is going to school. I feel sorry for his son that Roy is making him hide such a great achievement as going to an Ivy League School.
I’m waiting for you, too, Setting the Record.
Damn, is this all the McWherter folks do all day? Seriously, any parent would be thrilled that their child goes to Yale and I doubt Herron is an exception. Geez guys, get off the other candidates’ kids, talk about real issues, organize and win this thing. Talking about other candidates’ kids is truly desperation.
The funny thing is, I’m not sure who I’m voting for, and I’m not paid by any candidate, but I’m definitely not going to vote for a guy who has his campaign staffers blogging and responding to my comments on the Post.
Y’all do know there’s a straw poll tomorrow, right? Campaign 101: You might try calling some supporters to show up and vote for your candidate instead of wasting your time on blogs.
My previous comments was by no means a knock on Roys kid, and if it came across that way, I sincerely apologize. I actually think it is a great and amazing thing that he is going to Yale. It was a message directed straight at Mr. Herron. I think the fact that he won’t let his son tell people where he goes to school is beyond belief. Does he really believe that his son going to Yale will hurt him politically? Is he really such a cold calculating politician?
To address your other suggestion. I am NOT a McWherter troll. Like you I am not on anyone’s payroll. I am firmly in the anyone but Roy camp however I have yet to decide between Kyle, Cammack, McWherter or McMillan.
Alright yall,
It is really low that you’re going after Sen. Herron’s sons for choosing where they want to go to school. Respect the wishes of the family for not wanting it made widely public where the kids go to school. It’s their freshman year. They need to be away from the campaign trail and when your father is running for governor of the state, it’s kinda hard to be off the campaign trail. Leave the children of all the candidates out of this, it’s not about them.
Apology accepted, Ivy
But, there’s no way to verify that Herron has silenced his son and his son would be up in New Haven anyway, so doesn’t make sense that he would hush him.
Fair enough that you are in the “anyone but Roy” camp. I’m the same, but think McWherter isn’t the guy. I just hope you’ll help whoever the Dem nominee is, even if it is Herron. I’ll help McWherter if he wins without hesitation. I think we can all agree the Repubs aren’t a great alternative.
As Jim Kyle smiles and sits back with his bag of popcorn….
Bwahahahahahahahaha . . .
Herron and McWherter’s staffers bash each other, while Kyle fades into the ether of nothingness . . .
And no one cares about McMillan and that other guy.
Republicans across Tennnessee smile.
The problem with Democrat it is developing a bad Brand idetification.
