Davidson County GOP Wants Coop To Townhall On Health Care

Posted on August 16, 2009 at 10:28 am

A letter hand-delivered by the chair to Rep. Jim Cooper’s office:

August 13, 2009

Congressman Jim Cooper
605 Church St
Nashville, TN 37219

Dear Rep. Cooper,

On behalf of the Davidson County Republican Party’s Executive Committee, I would like to personally invite you to a healthcare reform forum with your constituents. We realize that your preference concerning this matter has been to meet or speak individually with concerned citizens, but we would like to stage an event—hopefully some evening in the next couple of weeks– in which only a moderator or members of our Executive Committee would ask questions chosen from previously submitted questions of concerned constituents. You can be assured of a well controlled crowd.

We would be happy to work with you to have copies of all the pertinent bills so that all questions can be referenced to specific sources so that we can be sure that our questions are based on actual provisions.

Our hope is that the constituents of Tennessee’s 5th District can be reassured of your willingness to listen and your willingness to go out and meet the people. In addition, a public forum will enable many more people to hear your viewpoint concerning HR3200.

As you probably know, Congressman Marsha Blackburn is holding a healthcare town hall meeting tomorrow in Franklin. To date, I do not believe the Democratic Party has called a local town hall gathering to discuss healthcare reform.

Our thought concerning a moderator is to invite someone from a media outlet. In addition, we would hope to have the event taped for media production.

Finally this meeting would not be a Republican meeting. It would be open to anyone, and we would be open to your suggestions concerning how to best communicate with your constituents.

I look forward to speaking with you concerning this proposal at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Starnes
Chairman

That’s because he knows these are being used by
the health industry to disrupt people with fear.

Nicely-worded letter. Ms. Starnes (or anyone in her position) easily could have gone down a contentious or otherwise detrimental road, but she avoided that. I am impressed.

    Rep. Jim Cooper,
    Pay attention Jim,
You are a representative of and for your constituents.
You constituents want your attention on a specific issue.
Ms. Starns has been very gracious in her invitation, but if you think you’re above listening to your constituents or simply don’t have the time to address their concerns, perhaps resignation of your position is in order.
It would create the opportunity for someone with the concern and fortitude to do the job that you are either unwilling or unable to do.

Its a Dog and Pony show from the pigland party is all.

The birther from Williamson County had a preselected crowd .

Is Lamar Alexander holding a Dog and Pony Show also? On why there should be no Health Care Reform so that the Big Ins Corps can still turn their 400% profiteering on the back of the Middle Clas sand US small business owners?

Ms Starnes go suck on on your damn swill ,its all about pigland breed!

cmj had it right. It was a respectful request, not a “Demand” as the Post link stated. Oh, well, journalism is what it is (or has become).

As 1st and 2nd Vice Chairs of the Davidson County Republican Party, it is important to point out that Chairman Starnes has pursued this course of action without approval from the DCRP. She erroneously purported to represent the Party and made an offer on it’s behalf without it’s consent.

The DCRP by-laws state that “the affairs of the Davidson County Executive Committee shall be governed by the Executive Committee”. At no point was a vote taken by the DCRP Executive Committee to extend an offer to host a town hall meeting with Representative Cooper.

While our personal opinions are such that Representative Cooper’s refusal to hold a public town hall meeting is cowardice, the DCRP rules must still be upheld by its officers. Unilateral actions of this nature are unacceptable regardless of perceived historical precedent by previous Chairmen. In this instance it should be noted that Chairman Starnes’ actions are not reflective of the will of the Davidson County Republican Party.

Upon realizing this offer had been publicized by local media an internal effort was made to convince Chairman Starnes to retract her offer since she was unauthorized to extend it. In the future perhaps Chairman Starnes will seek consensus from her Party prior to making external offers which falsely represent the will of the Party.

Yes the letter was polite. But behind the scenes I’m sure a gang of thugs will quickly be assembled to yell falsehoods and hold up idiotic signs if such a ‘Clown Hall’ meeting takes place.

I am not criticizing the ‘democratic process’, but rather the mob mentality fear-mongering that is being orchestrated by the health industry and far right/GOP organizers.

Saaying ‘Marsha holds Town Meetings’ is disingenuous as she is a darling of the teabaggers. Her meetings are civil because there are no ‘gangs of left wing thugs’ yelling pro-health reform slogans and holding up signs. If the shoe was on the other foot, Marsha would be under wraps.

Why are left-wing mobs considered “demonstrators,” and right-wing demonstrators considered “mobs?”

Bob.. Because Left Wing Mobs are Professionals they are paid to protest.

Rep. Cooper don’t do it. The GOP will come to kill. They do not want information they want to scream and carry on like a group of crazies. When all the other GOP hold town halls, then maybe you might, but not until then.

    Blue,

It sort of sounds like the last 40+ years of left wing demonstrations we’ve witnessed.
