I think redistricting may be more dangerous to all parties at this point than people realize regardless of who ends up doing the redistricting. The economy is throwing a wrench into things and people are going to migrate to wherever the jobs are once the jobs start to return. What is redistricted in 2010-2011 may not look anything like what those doing the redistricting envisioned come 2012 or later. The suburbs around the major cities could change demographically because of all of this (more than they would if we were in a normal recession/economy). Of course, they could also remain largely the same but with what they’re now calling a “jobless recovery” who knows. Those with families and the means to go to where the jobs are often go.

And one other often overlooked thing: those migrants both legal and illegal who started coming, especially in the East (but to other hot spots as well), about 15 years ago have had kids and those kids are US citizens and will soon be eligible to vote. They’ll be a constituency of their own and in some areas multiple new and unique constituencies.

That all said, incumbency will likely trump any redistricting for a while — just look at Lamar’s percentages in heavily democratic areas. TN like most places likes incumbents.

Black and Decker forced one of Tanner’s opponents to quit the race last week. They were going to fire the guy if he didnt drop out.
