The Board Is A Client

Posted on July 20, 2009 at 6:41 pm

WSMV on a potential school board candidate’s conflict:

One of the candidates for the Metro school board has an occupation that, he admits, could cause a potential conflict of interest.

He doesn’t just work for the state school board: He’s its attorney.

An academic point. The whole school board selection process is a done deal. Tonight was, ostensibly, an opportunity for some of the council members to get to know the candidates a bit better. It was a sham.

    Simmons?

Isn’t this conflict of interest (Coverstone taking a position he recommended be created) exactly what got us into this position?

Yes, Simmons. Merkel will get some votes. Limbird maybe a few.

The school board isn’t about the schools for these people much less about the kids and parents. It is about networking and building political coalitions.

I respectfully disagree. Kay Simmons is intelligent, professional, and has worked hard at the many things she’s been involved in and I don’t really mind if someone who has worked hard would also like to be a part of building a coalition. That’s all part of good representation. But then, if you understand the true intentions and selfish motivations of these candidates, you must be more personally acquainted with them than I am. Not in that district, but Simmons is the one I told my council person I’d like to see on the board.

I’m certainly glad there are many good people to choose from.

To clarify Johnny C, the point of the small gathering tonight was for council members to have an opportunity to query school board candidates. There was none of that. There was no need. In that sense it was a sham.

I’m sure Kay Simmons will fit right in on the school board.

Well, a lack of substance is always unfortunate.
