Wamp Concerned Knoxville Paper Is Pro-Haslam

Posted on July 19, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Wamp also has not asked for a correction from the paper on its C-Street reporting although he seemed to question it during a recent television appearance:

In fact, after Maddow’s report aired, Tom Humphrey, who is covering the Tennessee gubernatorial race for us, called Wamp’s office to doublecheck. Wamp did not return the call.

Coincidentally, when Collins was interviewing Wamp for the original story, Wamp said he was concerned about being treated fairly by the News Sentinel in our coverage of the gubernatorial race. That concern hadn’t been expressed to me, so I called Wamp’s office for clarification and spoke to Joe Painter. I asked that he have the congressman contact me if he had any concerns, and to date I have not heard from Wamp.

The News Sentinel is pro-Republican period. Given that Big Jim is well liked in Knoxville there’s going to be a certain amount of hometown advantage for Mayor Haslam beyond his own political career. The good news for Wamp and the rest of the GOP contenders is that Mayor Haslam is not nearly as well liked as his father is. Knoxvillians will also remember the recent price gouging Haslam pulled.

However, shouldn’t Wamp have a home court advantage with the Chattanooga press? If he doesn’t then whose fault is that?

Republicans are destined to have one very bloody primary this year given the egos/players involved. Wamp shouldn’t be whining this soon. KNS will support whoever wins the GOP primary regardless of anything else — just like they always do regardless of the specific candidates or circumstances. Whether that support actually matters in the primary or general remains to be seen.

    ACK -

Yeah, the KNS was really pro-Republican in a recent Sunday editorial where it called all Tennessee Republicans racists and idiots.

As for being pro-Haslam, Wamp should be concerned. And it has nothing to do with the factors Jen lists. Cash money, folks - pure and simple.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Ho hum - another Republican blaming biased media. Poor silly fools - no one except Fox News ever likes Republicans.

Wamp has a C Street problem … he’s knee deep in something that is gonna keep getting attention - Ensign’s the gift that keeps on giving, and who knows where Pickering’s court case is gonna lead. I think, if Wamp knew about Ensign in particular, he has a credibility problem. Either he’s a Christian who abhors sexual indescretions and doesn’t think its suitable behavior for a public official, or he’s a hypocrite who tolerates it in friends, enables it by keeping silent counsel, and then criticizes it in others. He needs to get out front, leave the C Street group and call for Ensign’s resignation - anything less suggests he condones Ensign’s behavior.

I don’t recall a KNS editorial calling all Tennessee Republicans idiots and racists. Perhaps they should, though. I certainly believe that all - or most - Tennessee Republicans are idiots and/or racists. The exceptions are the old school East Tennessee moderates who became Republican because it was the Party of Lincoln and not because it was the party of Nixon’s Southern Strategy. Since Haslam comes close to the moderate camp, I could see why idiot/racist base of the TNGOP would be alarmed.
