Carter County Republicanism Applied To Guns In Parks
By Kleinheider Posted on July 19, 2009 at 5:51 pmSpeaker Kent Williams responds to chatter that the legislature will remove a provision in the guns in parks bill which allows local governments to opt out:
“I’m not for taking away their right to opt out,” the Republican lawmaker from Elizabethton said. “I don’t like the federal government mandating laws on the state, and I’m not a big fan of mandating things on local governments.”

The Columbia City Council has voted down a proposed ban on guns in city parks. Stupid beyond belief. We’ve had some major, bloody adult fights at ball games.
Columbia’s carpetbagger mayor’s support of the ban is the only smart thing he has done since his arrival.
I don’t think it’s fair to label that Carter County Republicanism - up here, the cities are all in favor of banning guns - I know Johnson City has done so, not sure about Elizabethton. I think in this instance KW is showing is pure TNGOP roots …
Guns in parks is NUTS. Until we make a distinction between parks where you can be threatened by bears (e.g. the Smokey Mtns) and parks where parents fight over little league games this law is asking for trouble.
Remind me not to go to the parks that Donna goes to. I’m risking a brutal beating by going there, and it’s just NUTS for me to want to defend myself from it.
