Modern talking heads - from Fox, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, on and on - need to go to school on this man. He was the epitome of class, of reporting devoid of opinion. When he went to Vietnam and reported what was going on there factually and absent White House spin (though the term wasn’t in use then), his reporting made clear to Americans that the war as being fought by the Johnson Administration was un-winnable. Cronkite mirrored America - he reported the news the way he understood Americans needed to hear it, and his coverage of great events - from funerals to landings on the moon - were restrained, informative and - human.
