Blue Dog Revolt On Health Care

Posted on July 17, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Glenn Thrush reports:

A coalition of Blue Dogs and committee Republicans just forced Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) to accept a Republican amendment, authored by Oklahoma Rep. John Sullivan, requiring the secretary of Health and Human Services to terminate duplicative programs created by the bill.

The amendment passed, 29-27.

Waxman was trying to work Blue Dogs Mike Ross (D-Ark.) and Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) during the vote — leaving his chair to make his case. Waxman’s staff director hovered over the woman tallying the votes as she counted them up.

I’d actually have to side with the Blue Dogs here. What’s unreasonable about eliminating duplicative programs?

    Brawndo - that’s what I don’t get either. That’s totally reasonable.

The Blue Dogs have the chance to deliver real reform to our health care system this year.
Failure to muster the political courage to support the 1.7 million Tennesseans who went without health care last year will not win them a pass from Republicans or redistricting.
It will, however, alienate the progressive grassroots they will need to do the hard work of winning a closer election.

The irony is that the Blue Dogs represent districts where health care is needed the most. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/07/blue-dog-districts-need-health-care.html

We’ll get health care through reconciliation if we have to. Then will have a list of traitors to go after since we won’t need their votes any more.

I think the Blue Dogs read the handwriting on the wall.

Healthcare is not a winner in 2010.

and they were Burned on Cap and Trade.

Would it be a good idea to set up a government health insurance company to compete with private health insurance companies?
