The Streets Of Forrest Hills
By Kleinheider Posted on July 12, 2009 at 1:13 pmGail Kerr on Forrest Hills wish to raise its own police department:
It would set a wickedly dangerous precedent. If one neighborhood can form its own police department, could it follow with its own public school system? Or put its city park behind a locked gate?
I’ll say what Mayor Dean is too polite to: The whole thing smacks of elitism based on wealth and perceived privilege.
Add in the potential to erode the centralized form of government Nashvillians adopted by vote 46 years ago, and that really would be a crime.

It’s “Forest” (with one ‘r’) as in - a bunch of trees in one place - rather than “Forrest” as in that Confederate General.
Kerr’s article only just touches on the legal argument against a police force in Forest Hills, which is that part of the agreement that led to the creation of Metro was that the satellite cities would be allowed to keep the services already in place if they accepted Metro jurisdiction for everything else. Belle Meade already has a police force to
shake down motorists passing throughdeal with thelaughably small amount ofcrime there. That’s really the only argument that needs to be made, but it gets drowned out in the hyperbole.
How often do you see patrol cars on your street, Ilissa?
I’ve been in Forest Hills for about 8 years and have seen a grand total of one on my street. That’s far different from the experience that I had when I lived in East Nashville.
This despite a home invader/rapist allowed to run loose up and down Otter Creek Rd. for 14 years - and that guy only got put out of business because of Brentwood’s PD, not Metro.
That’s some value for your tax dollar.
Kerr is showing her usual naievete. If the citizens of Forest Hills who receive wish to have additional police coverage and they are willing for it, how is that elitism? Kerr is a liberal elitist who continues to espouse her socialist views via Pravda on the Cumberland.
Well said goldnl, and don’t forget the speed trap cops of Lakewood PD.
Andy, maybe you just can’t see the streets from behind your wall.
I was at Radnor Lake last weekend and saw two metro cars on the way there. And I have NEVER in two years, seen a cop car on my street in Madison–admittedly I live on a cul-de-sac.
Forest Hills should not get their own police department! Where would that lead!
Soon, Belle Meade, Berry Hill, and Goodlettsville would have their own Police!
Wait, what do you mean they already do?
