Eleven Congressional Districts Represented By Dems Gave McCain More Than 60%

Posted on July 9, 2009 at 8:56 am

Tennessee has two of them:

More than four dozen districts sent a Democrat to Congress last year while casting a plurality of their votes for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for president. Of the 49 Congressional districts where this occurred, 11 gave McCain more than 60 percent of the vote.

But not all of those 11 look equally vulnerable. Six of those successful Democrats won handily in 2008 (with at least 59 percent of the vote) — Reps. Charlie Melancon (La.), Ike Skelton (Mo.), Gene Taylor (Miss.), Dan Boren (Okla.), Lincoln Davis (Tenn.) and Bart Gordon (Tenn.) — and their electoral histories suggest that nothing short of a tsunami could seriously threaten them. Indeed, three of them (Skelton, Taylor and Gordon) proved their mettle more than a decade ago by surviving in 1994.

Gordon is going down next year. The vote for Cap and Trade and the Stimilus package and never read the bills. He is a disgrace for not doing the most basic requirements - reading.

TNVol, I’d be careful about what you wish for.

If Cooper goes down, it will be because a more liberal Democrat beat him in the primary. And an R has no chance getting elected in the 5th.

So I guess, for once, I agree with you. Let’s say goodbye to Jim Cooper in 2010. And hello to a real Democrat that will give Nashville the representation it deserves.

Spaz.. I think there will be another conservitive replacing Cooper, Dem or Rep.

I would prefer neither an R or D.

Spaz you also forget the District gets redrawn in 2010.. and the GOP has Gerrymandering XBox controller.

Yes, look for the 5th to be connected to N. Knox County, and for Gordon’s district to stretch to Blount and Sevier Counties… Nashville’s new boundaries will look like what Delay did to Austin–breaking up a predominantly Democratic county three ways and connecting it to far-away crazy GOP hinterlands.

Anyone that thinks Bart Gordon or Jim Cooper will get beat next year is just plain nuts.

Ben is right, neither Gordon or Cooper will be beaten next year. That’s not to say the conditions aren’t right for it, especially in Gordon’s case. Rather, there is no leadership coming out of the RNC and no quality candidates willing to step forward in either of those districts. The would-be formidable opponents are waiting until 2012. Assuming the GOP controls re-districting, the only truly safe Democrat district in Tennessee will be the 9th.
