Bredesen Accepts Education Innovation Award

Posted on July 9, 2009 at 4:07 pm

From a press release:

“I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of the state of Tennessee,” Bredesen said. “It affirms our hard work to make and keep education Tennessee’s number one priority. The most important thing we can do to improve our workforce and our citizens’ quality of life is to provide our children with a good education. It begins with quality pre-k, continues with more students graduating from high school ready for postsecondary education or the workforce, and includes more Tennesseans choosing to attend college.”

There are too many educational awards and rankings based on inputs and not enough on outputs. Notice there is no mention of students in Tennessee doing better academically despite the increased spending.

Excellent point, Rep. Dunn. And it’s outcomes that count…otherwise it’s just window dressing.

And the tragedy is that we know this. Reasonable people, across the ideological spectrum, know that these kinds of awards are a sham, that evaluating education by looking at spending has nothing to do with achievement. Such groups reward those who keep the spigot open and increase the pressure. Education spending, for them, is about sustaining an industry.

And from the media? Well we get commentary about Michael Jackson and Steve McNair. That’s fine but why post this without comment? Why not point out what everybody knows - the king has no clothes.
