The Bedford Brawl: The Candidates Considering The Cobb Seat

Posted on July 5, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Local newspaper editor John Carney keeps you informed:

Pat Marsh of Shelbyville, chairman of Big G Express, said Saturday morning that he would definitely be a candidate in the Republican primary, after having said Thursday that he was considering a run. Marsh said his business experience would be an asset in the position and had said Thursday that friends had urged him to run.

Marsh said he plans to pick up the qualifying petition forms this week.

Republican Barbara Blanton of Shelbyville, who ran against Cobb in 2008, said Thursday she expected to make a decision soon about whether to seek the suddenly-vacant seat again.

“We ran a real strong campaign last time,” Blanton told the Times-Gazette, and she said she has been receiving calls of encouragement about a race to take the seat this time.

Cobb’s brother Ty, a Shelbyville resident who works with UPS, is a possible Democratic candidate for the seat. Bedford County Deputy Administrator of Elections Andrew Robertson said Thursday afternoon that the only petition forms picked up so far had been on behalf of Ty Cobb.

You can bet that this race will garner considerable attention from the Republican and Democratic State Party’s. This race is a harbinger for the Democrats. If they can’t keep this seat which I doubt they will then watch for a significant number of Democrats in the House to announce their retirement before the 2010 election. They have never been in a minority muchless drawn out through redistricting.

The dems seem to be at a significant disadvantage:

    1) they will not have the organization with the Chipmunk at the helm

    2) because of the aforementioned it is doubtful they will be able to raise the neccesary money

    3) there seems to be a significant difference in the level of enthusiasim within the democratic party as to whether they can even keep this seat

    4) this district went for McCain by a 2 to 1 margin over Obama and things have gotten worse for the dems since then

    5) with all due respect to Curt’s little brother Tyrus, I doubt being a UPS driver qualifies him to be a state rep., having said that it doens’t seem to make that much difference, however making $25.00 an hour 6 onths out of the year will be tough the other half…he might consider carefully

    6) finally, the republicans “want it” more than the dems; the dems are playing defense and are on their heels.

Prediction: Republican win in October 53% to 47%

    This will be fun!

The Dems will struggle to keep this seat. Pat Marsh is an outstanding candidate while the Democrats see this as a seat to be handed from Daddy Cobb to son Cobb to other son, Jr. Cobb.
